Find Ancestors

I want to find out what happened to my great grandfather Hugh Duncan. He was probably born 1844 but possibly 1835. Possibly born in Little Neston, Wirral, and then living in Liverpool. Married Ellen Curwen in 1863 and fathered James in 1866 and Hugh who died with his mother in 1871. Hugh then married Elizabeth Webster in 1871 and went on to have 5 children, the last being born in 1884. After that he just vanishes. He was a Master Mariner so perhaps he died at sea? The family seem to have lived in Merseyside but may have Scottish connections with Dunoon.

If anyone can help that would be great.

This is amazing. Yes, this is the wife of Hugh and his children by Elizabeth are my great Aunts and uncles, and his first child by his first wife is my grandfather.

I am unable to answer your questions as the site will no longer allow me to access the census details. I don't know why. But when it works again I will reply to you.

Looking up females is more difficult. Do I look them up under their married name from the time they are married, or do I keep their birth names? We have Elizabeth down as having been born in 1850 in Liverpool West Merseyside. I don't know where this info came from.

Their married names will show in censuses and death records.

Meant to say that Elizabeth Webster is still down as head of household but not widowed in the 1891 census. She is widowed in the 1901 census.
