Thanks, MarieCeleste.

I found whom I thought was 'my' William on the 1881 Census described as an unemployed wood carver and joiner.

I've spent so much time on this that I feel for those people searching for surnames Smith, Jones, Brown etc.

Now back to the drawing-board!

Sorry, MarieCeleste, I pressed a wrong key I think.

I meant to put my last message on this board.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 22 Jun 2011 22:20

Joyce, I think that 1881 is the right one!

The son's name (William R) tallies with the 1871, and Willian senior's occupation is correct.

(your reply automatically goes to the last page, you can't choose where to put it!)

My postings keep disappearing! Sorry, everyone.

You are a genius, MarieCeleste.

The family story was that Mary Waters Thomas's mother was from quite a wealthy family; apparently they had fish brought from Aberdeen every week - looking at these two (Ship Carrier William and Scottish-born Elizabeth) it rung a bell with me straight away. (Although I have to stay the wealth never filtered down as my grandparents were disowned by both sides!)

If the death that Ozibird found is right then William may have remarried (but she's gone too?)

MarieCeleste

Joyce, I think that Ship Carrier in 1871 should really be Ship Carver.

Perhaps this marriage, and going by daughter's name on 1881 possibly married Charlotte.

For interest: Liverpool Registry Office is closed for refurbishment (my cousin visited there last week). The records have been transferred temporarily to Crosby (nearer her home!).

We'll try to get a copy of the marriage cert as you suggest - but think we may have to find a Scottish marriage.

Well that confirms it Lancashire Ann.

Has anyone found Elizabeth's maiden name (Scottish-born)?

She can't be the Elizabeth McNeal, can she?

I may have to search around Aberdeen eventually which is where her family came from - so the family story goes. Has anyone any hints for Scottish searches, please?

Yes, I can be a bit dim at times - I never thought about looking at the second page to view postings!

Yes, you may need to research Scotland for the marriage, but there are these Elizabeths living in the same parish in 1851.

Elizabeth McCroy abt 1832 Scotland Visitor Kirkdale, Lancashire

Joyce, I really don't think Elizabeth McNeal was your William's bride. The parentage and occupations on that marriage is all wrong, and I also found that couple in 1861 (first page).

Those Scottish Elizabeths that Ozi found are interesting .....

This looks like your William & Elizabeth's daughter:

Her birth cert would give you her mother's name.
