Why don't you get in touch with the pub and ask if the current landlord knows its history?

NO mention of the Dovecot on 1891 census

You didn't answer the question about William's address when he married..........................

He could have been at the address between censuses..............so there won't be any census info

I think you need to wait for FULL facts from the paperwork referred to

This is William Holloway in 1891. He is in Laxton and recorded as a Publican but the original doesn't show any addresses apart from the such places as the Vicarage and Schoolhouse.

1891 England, Wales & Scotland Census
Westwood, Laxton, Southwell, Nottinghamshire, England

First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Sex Age Birth year Occupation Birth place
William Holloway Head Married Male 48 1843 Publican Worcestershire, England
Sarah Holloway Wife Married Female 31 1860 - Laxton, Nottinghamshire, England
George Holloway Son Single Male 15 1876 Farm labourer Portsmouth, Hampshire, England
William Holloway Son - Male 6 1885 Scholar Newark, Nottinghamshire, England
Arthur Holloway Son - Male 5 1886 Scholar Laxton, Nottinghamshire, England
Ernest Holloway Son - Male 2 1889 - Laxton, Nottinghamshire, England
Albert Holloway Son - Male 1 1890 - Laxton, Nottinghamshire, England

You could perhaps put the 1891 census up against the 1881/1901 and see if you can "walk" through the village. Maybe some people will still be living in the same place or the Dovecote came x number of dwellings after the Schoolhouse?

As I suggested originally and EricaH has repeated today - try contacting today's pub landlord and see if he holds any relevant documents.

Pleased to say my 2xGt Grandad's brother was landlord at the Trip to Jerusalem in Nottingham - picked up initially on census. The pub has a list up on the wall of previous landlords and have recently updated it to include years served. The relationship unfortunately didn't earn me a free drink!

The other place to try is the Records Office who had to grant licenses.

Greyghost suggests comparing censuses to see if it's possible to work out which household would be the Dove Cot Inn in 1891.

I tried that several days ago, and can't make even a guess.

In 1901, the Inn is household 41 in Laxton
The Schoolhouse is 21.
George Weatherall and family are at household 36.
John & Mary Cook are household 38.
John Bagshaw and his wife Mary are household 45.

The numbers aren't house numbers as in a street - all the households in the village are numbered from the first to the last (1 to 95, in 1901).

In 1891 there are 83 households in Laxton.
The Schoolhouse is household 25.
John & Mary Cook are household 40.
George Weatherall and family are household 41 (which does NOT mean he's at the Inn),
and John & Mary Bagshaw are 43.

It's impossible to work out from that where the Inn might be.

People in villages often moved around from one house to another in the same village. (And in the same street in a town, for that matter.)

Household 46 in 1891 consists of Thomas Gray, farmer and innkeeper, and his wife Martha and a farm servant Charles Taylor - but their household doesn't have a name, so it MIGHT be the Inn - but we can't say definitely.

Not sure if it’s been suggested before, but you could try looking at copies of local Kelly’s Directory - usually accessible in the Public Library, reference section

Gertrude Alice Barren Fowler only what you have kindly found
So I am going to apply to The General Register to see what is entered
On the birth Certificate

The Dovecote Inn Laxton Nottinghamshire Landlord has only been there for about 2 years so couldn’t help us
But was interested in the Census forms from 1911 to 1861
Also maybe the Dovecote Inn goes back to about 1839,as a farm / inn

We enjoyed our trip Laxton Nottinghamshire

The census won’t be available on Genes for some years. Even those with subs to FMP will have to make a payment to view.

It has been agreed that a couple of other public access points other than Kew will have free access. One is in Wales - you will need to ‘google’ yourself to find out the named places.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 5 Jan 2022 15:59

1921 will be pay-to-view ONLY for the foreseeable future. And ONLY on FMP

Found by Googling

How much will the census cost?
£2.50 for every record transcript and £3.50 for every original record image.

nameslessone

nameslessone Report 5 Jan 2022 16:18

Except that, if you can get there you can view it for free at Kew ( the National Archives)
The Central Library in Manchester and the National Library of Wales.

I expect that one would have to book a visit under covid rules.
