thanks mgnv

didn't realise that it was on the printed form - just knew I had seen it before

the last one I found at Haslingdon was 30th Dec 1829 and the next one was different so that 1929ish was pretty accurate, I would guess from 1 Jan 1830

Mark - Jan posted the 1841 census ref, specifically:
RG number: HO107
Piece: 509
Book/Folio: 8/15
Page: 22

You can search for this page on FMP, Ancestry and GR.

On FMP, go to https://www.findmypast.co.uk/ then Search Records - Census, etc - then a person search of any year.
There's a censys ref search link in bottom right corner of search screen.

On Ancestry, you need to do an old style search, so go to http://www.ancestry.co.uk/ then Search - Search all records.
The old/new switch will now appear at far right just under the main banner bar
Click on Go to Old Search (unless the switch says Go to New Search - in that case you're already in old search)
Now from main banner bar again: Search - Census etc and pick the appropriate census from the big list.
On search screen, show advanced option and check exact matches only.

On GR, the search by ref link is below the normal census search screen
