Keith - although I think I found the right mob in 1861, what do I know, eh.

The important bit abt my post was that you should use http://www.northwalesbmd.org.uk/ as well as http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

hi Keith

it is often good to go over things when you are not sure you have gone in the right direction.

if we can help at all please do post again

perhaps if you gave us the details of Lizzie we could help you get started. You said she was born in Holyhead and the site mgnv has given you has mother's maiden names for those born in Anglesey. There are quite a few Elizabeths with mmn = Roberts over the years and a few Griffith / Roberts marriages so the time scale is quite important.

just as an extra point - as had been mentioned before indexes were not always accurate. the name could have been written as Griffiths.

Yes, Keith, family stories are often open to question.........one can liken them to 'chinese whispers' at times.

Could you please post on here the full name and birth year/birthplace ONLY of the person whose parents' marriage you are trying to find...and say whether or not you have purchased the birth cert.

You asked about Ancestry v Findmypast....

To decide which you think would be more suitable for your needs, look at their sites, and compare what they offer.

Keith,

How do you know Lizzie's parents? Do you have her birth certificate?

Do you have her marriage certificate showing father's name and occupation?

There is an Elizabeth Griffiths on a tree on Ancestry whose parents are Margaret Roberts and THOMAS Griffiths. Censuses place them in Llanllechid and there is a marriage

Marriages Dec 1863 (>99%)
Griffiths Thomas Llandilofawr 11a 1003
Roberts Margaret Llandilofawr 11a 1003

Both of these places are in South Wales rather than North....

presumably Keith has the names from his grandmother

"I remember my grandmother Lizzie the daughter of John and Margaret Griffiths saying her mums name was Roberts "

BUT

we really do need to know

WHEN

his grandmother was born (previously stated in Holyhead)

we may be on the wrong timescale and there are several Griffith / Roberts marriages

OMG so sorry for wasting everybodys time I even had the wrong name very many apologies
I have been to my great aunts today and have obtained a copy of Lizzies birth cert
she was born may 1886 in Vron Anglesey to John Griffiths and Mary not Margaret Griffiths nee Roberts
father was a coal porter
if anybody is still speaking to me I would love info on this family
a very good lesson learned do not assume anything until I have proof and take all stories told with a pinch of salt
once again many apologies :-S

thanks I feel such a fool
I will make sure I have the certificates in future before I take anything as the facts
I questioned family and was really sent the wrong way ..nobodys fault but my own
my aunt says well she was always known as Maggie and that is short for Margaret
that will teach me
the cap is really nice I had an uncle who played Rugby for Warrington Wires (they are the Wolves now

No need to beat yourself up............it's a thing everyone has done ..........at least once

Just remember not to trust family 'stories'............lol!

The names b y which people are 'known' often bear no relation to their given names.

My late sister-in-law was 'Molly' to everyone who knew her.................it wasn't until she died that I found she was actually Irene Lucy!
