Please help me try and locate these two Thomsons in the family.

John Thomson was born 14/05/1885 in Larkhall to George Thomson and Mary Scott. He married Jeanie (Jane) Orr on 15/06/1913 in Dalserf in Scotland.
I can't find any information regarding them after this date.

George Smail Thomson was born 21/10/1894 in Larkhall to George Thomson and Maggie (Margaret) Smail. I can't find any information about a marriage or death.

His father George Thomson, born 17/12/1870, emigrated to Canada in 1925, sailing from Glasgow to Montreal, arriving 11/07/1925.

He travelled between Canada and New York state at least 3 times, 25/05/1931, 24/10/1940 and 24/10/1947 but I can't find anything for him after that.

Any help is much appreciated

The one who "travelled between Canada and New York state at least 3 times, 25/05/1931, 24/10/1940 and 24/10/1947" -

I'm assuming that's the father, George Thomson?

Have you found George Smail Thomson on 1901 or 1911 census?

John Report 14 Sep 2013 11:52

I found George S Thomson on the 1911 census, he is living at Gala Cottage with his father George, mother Maggie and sister Elizabeth

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 14 Sep 2013 11:52

He's also in Larkhall with his parents and sister Elizabeth in 1911, working as an ironmonger's shop assistant.
(Parents married 17 years; 3 children, 2 living.)

Trouble is, George Thomson, without the middle name, is such a common name, when searching for a marriage or death.

It was father George travelling between US and Canada. When he emigrated he was with wife and daughter, both called Margaret. Wife may have died between 1940 & 1947 crossings as he doesn't name her on the 1947 entry.

MargaretM Report 14 Sep 2013 12:07

The George who arrived in Canada in 1925 was aged 54 with wife Margaret, 50 and 8 year old daughter Margaret. They're going to join son-in-law Rob;t Poat/Peat, 30a ashdale Ave., Toronto. They give name of relative at home as brother Alex Thomson, Charing Cross, Larkhall.

Possible death of Jeanie (Jane) Thomson nee Orr:

1953 THOMSON JANE ORR F 63 DALSERF AND LARKHALL /LANARK 638/00 0046

Flip

Flip Report 14 Sep 2013 12:17

The military record I posted - the address is Gala Cottage, but I think it may be a different George as after looking through his record he appears to survive the war. Just ploughing through to see if he named any nok.

ADDED: I can't see mention of nok, but he was discharged to the reservists in 1920 - according to his record he was a skilled blacksmith.

ArgyllGran Report 14 Sep 2013 12:17

Or, a less likely but still possible death for Jeanie (Jane):

1954 THOMSON JANE ORR F 67 TOWNHEAD GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/06 0837

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 14 Sep 2013 12:27

re John Thomson born 1885

there are no deaths in Scotland of a John Thomson with mms Scott, 1913 - 1990, with birth year 1885 +/- 2/

There are 67 in Lanarkshire, without mms stipulated, all other search criteria the same.

Only one in Dalserf/Larkhall, so I expect this is Jeanie (Jane)'s husband:

1957 THOMSON JOHN WILSON M 73 DALSERF AND LARKHALL /LANARK 638/00 0071

John

John Report 14 Sep 2013 12:31

I found this on the war graves Photographs project, apparently his mother and father resided in Toronto, I can't find an emigration for them before 1925.

21st March 1918. Age 23. Son of George and Margaret Thomson of "Bemersyde Haig Avenue, Birchcliff, Toronto, Canada.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 14 Sep 2013 12:34

Can't tell you if John & Jeanie (Jane) had children - not wiithout great expense!

There were 137 Thomson births registered in Larkhall, 1913 - 1930.

Flip Report 14 Sep 2013 13:01

John, I think the death of George Smail Thomson is not him - if you have found that his parents George & Margaret were living in Toronto. The image for your George & Margaret into Canada in 1925 states they have not lived in Canada before.

If the 1911 census still puts him at Gala Cottage, Larkhall, then the military record I found would be your George I think. Also, why would he be in the Tyneside Irish?

John

John Report 14 Sep 2013 13:05

1911 he was still at Gala Cottage, unless the inscription was done after they had moved to Canada, just a thought tho
