I am looking for information on Samuel Prouse (1850-1932), or rather that is what he was known as, in various stages of his life he has been known as Edward (1861 census), Edward Samuel (Death Cert), Edward William Samuel (2nd marriage cert), but most of the records I've found since him being an adult have been Samuel (1st marriage cert, censuses 1881-1911) I never found him on the 1871 census.

What do I know, he was born in Ashbury, Devon in 1850 (a tiny farming village). but there is no GRO record, later census records confirm date, church records were destroyed in fire so no christening record, marriage cert, no clues here, father is unknown, he married Mary Ann Carter in Brotton, North Yorkshire in 1873, he had 13 children, and they lived in Marske, Mary died in 1920 and in 1921 he married Mary French. Samuel and his sons worked in the Ironstone mines at Skinningrove.

There is a story that Samuels grandfather disowned his mother for being pregnant and unmarried, his sons found out some years later that it was reputed he had relented and wanted contact but Samuel forbade his sons to do so, the name of the mother and grandfather are unknown.

Any information, especially Samuels mother, would be most helpful.

Many thanks.

As it wasn't compulsory to register a birth until the 1873, his mother probably didn't bother. Bearing in mind that you believe that his mother was 'disowned', check the nearest work house records. She may have gone there for the birth and would be recorded on the Admission and (both on the) Discharge books.

Have you managed to track down the Bishop Transcript books of parish records or were the PR destroyed before they could be compiled?

Have you found Edward Samuel on the 1851 census? Who else is in the household and what is his relationship to them?

Have you followed through with the witness names on the first MC, or are they from the bride's side of the family?

The Prouse family pages are still under construction.

My Gt-Gt-Grandfather was Samuel Prouse (b: about 1850 in Ashbury, Devon) he married Mary Ann Carker (b: about 1857, Liskard, Cornwall) on 5th February, 1873 in Brotton, North Yorkshire.

Although my branch of this family stayed in the Yorkshire area, there are many references to Devon & Cornwall.

Thank you very much for the replies

Thank you for the 1871 census, that fits, its obviously mistranscribed, this links with Mary Ann Carter, she was born in Cornwall, Mary's father Richard moved up to Skinningrove to work in the mines as well, perhaps this was how they met.

I have not found him on the 1851 census, there is a record for an Edward Prouse

Name: Edward S Prowse
Age: 2
Gender: Male
Birthplace: N K
Relationship to Head of Household: Visitor
Schedule Type: Household

I dont have access to view the record though.

The Prouse family pages under construction are mine, I started the website many moons ago, I havent updated it for some time due to other commitments, I have just recommenced researching after a long break.

I have much information on Samuels children, they are:
Mary Elizabeth 1874-1955
Samuel Richard 1876-1953
Albert William 1978-1948
Emma Jane 1880-1940
Eli Joseph 1882-1970
Edmund Thomas 1884-1958 (my gt-grandfather)
Minnie 1886-1962
Lily 1889-1891
Louie 1891-1976
Lily 1893-1979
Alfred 1896-1971
Mabel 1899-1908
Joe 1901-1990

The witnesses on the the 1st MC are James and Mary Ann Tenby they dont appear to have any connection, they were husband and wife and they lived in St Cleer in 1871, which is were Mary Ann Carter came from, it may be a relative of Mary she was only 17 at the time of her marriage.

Thanks for the 1851 census transcript, it offers little clues doesnt it, Ellen Burridge could be the mother I suppose, but generally the children took the same surname as the mother when born out of wedlock, in 1861 Ellen is a servant in Paddington, London and Edward is in Chagford Okehampton.

George Report 5 Jan 2014 10:09

In 1846 a Thomas Prouse b1826c married Mary Ann Gale b1826c. According to the 1851 census they and their daughter Mary Ann b1847 are living in Inwardleigh which is not too far from Ashbury. It is possible that Thomas and Mary Ann were the parents of Samuel (Edward).

Thanks George, anything is a possibility with this chap, his marriage cert states father unknown, so I'm assuming his mother unmarried, some time ago, his Gt Grandaughter did say to my cousin that she believed he was illegitimate but we have never been able to prove it, or otherwise. The above couple could be relatives of his mother of course
