Thanks, Gins. They obviously did go to the US then. I guessed they might have done because I couldn't find them anywhere here.

It's interesting that Sarah and David went to the US on different ships at different times. And so did the old folks by the look at it. David and Sarah had a child, William, born in Merthyr Tydfil in 1883 so maybe she had to wait until he was old enough to travel. I had no idea when I started on this that there would be so much information out there. I'm now spending time here when I haven't yet done the shopping! Maybe Hubby won't be hungry this weekend.

Here's one of the censuses I missed:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X46S-4KS
Harry Joyce Head M 34 New York
Quen Joyce Wife F 32 New Jersey
Harry E Joyce Son M 9 New Jersey
Evelyn Joyce Daughter F 4 New Jersey
Household ID: 470 , Line Number: 96
Affiliate Film Number: 1342 ,
GS Film number: 2341077 , Digital Folder Number: 004660895 , Image Number: 00238
[The image does say Quen - unlike the UK censuses, where most info was gotten from forms dropped off a few days before-hand, filled in by the h/h'er, and just checked over by the enumerator, the US census was done by face-to-face questioning - an approach only needed in the UK when the h/h'er had bother folling in the form.
Obviously, the actual enumeration takes longer in the US - I drew attn to the 1900 actual enumeration date, so that took 13 days so far.
What the US saves is the dropping off of census forms in a place that doesn't have a door-to-door postal service - out west, I've seen Enumertor's Districts of over 500 sq miles - fancy going round that twice in a month?]

Remember, 4 clicks, then save - or else you get low resolution files downloaded:

[addy = 535 Bergen St. The street is sideways in col 1, and the house # is in col 2]

Annie - yes, that's a fimiliar pattern. In my wife's family, bro & bro-in-law went first, then the sister & kids went out to join one hubby, accompanied by her hubby, then she joined sis & hubby, and 11y after it all began, parnts joined their 2 daurs & grand-kids. The bro meanwhile returned, and 2 other sisters, now marr, stayed in the UK. In another case, the whole family went out to PA for a few years, then returned - their US born son was really easy to spot on the English census, even when mistranscribed.

In my family, my dad's adult cousin came first, followed a year later by his parents and 2 younger bros.

When you think abt it, it makes sense to check things out first - that way, you can get a job and line up accomodation - alternatively, if things don't look good, you've only lost time and the cost of one return trip. Of course, there are some home situations where anything is an improvement, and that's where one sees the classic examples of "serial immigration", so as soon as the immigrant has enough money for a ticket, he brings someone over, and when they've enough money for another ticket, another family member comes over, etc, etc.
