In the 1851 census I have James Dennett b. 1802 in St. Helens, wife Margaret b. 1809 in St. Helens, with children Elizabeth b. 1840 and Thomas b. 1849, both in Liverpool. I can't find any of them in the 1861 census. Can anyone help please.

I know that Thomas married in 1868 but it's the 1861 census I'm interested in.

Thank you.

Thanks everyone ... it certainly looks like him. Those deaths for James and Margaret would certainly explain why I couldn't find them. Now I guess I'll just have to try to find the Bolton connection.

Thanks again.

Unfortunately, they are not yet on LancsBMD, or LancsOPC, so no way of getting the ages.

BUT.........the family were living in LIVERPOOL in 1851

In 1861, the child is recorded as grandson, so do you know Margaret's maiden name?

Purely out of interest, and in view of the occupation, are these James's parents?

Thanks Jacqueline.
I'm afraid I have no idea who James' parents were, all I know is that he was married to Margaret ??. I've tried to find her maiden name but so far had no luck. I've also been trying to find the connection with his grandparents (the Boltons) but so far nothing.

The James and Elizabeth you found in the 1841 census, living with the Churnock family, seem to have disappeared. I've just had a look in the 1851 but couldn't find them. They're probably related to my James but not sure how.

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 20 Jul 2015 17:06

I can't help feeling that James in 1841 is the same person as in 1851.......look at the occupation

Which would fit also with the 1797 marriage, in view, again, of the occupation.

Sons tended to follow fathers - especially in skilled occupations

I realise this is speculation, but, you never know, you may find info to corroborate it eventually.............or to rule it out completely.

This is getting really confusing. The baptism given by safc looks good, except that everything I have shows Thomas' birth as 1849/50. His marriage certificate for 1868 gives his age as 19, and in the 1871 & 1881 census his birth is shown as 1849 and 1850 in the 1891 census. I can't find a Thomas born in 1835 to James and Elizabeth in 1841 census.
I've sent off for a birth certificate that I think might be his (Sep 1848, W. Derby, 20/950) so hopefully it's the correct one and I can find his mother's maiden name.

The James in the 1841 census is married to Elizabeth, the one in 1851 census is married to Margaret. James and Margaret had Elizabeth in 1840 and Thomas in 1849. It gives James' birth date as 1802 and Margaret as 1809 ... to me that seems old to have their first child in those days. I suppose James could've been married before to the Elizabeth in the 1841 census but I can't find a marriage to Margaret.

Still thinking.

The child baptised in 1835 could have died................it was common practice to name a child after a deceased sibling

Saying to the enumerator that Margaret was his wife does not prove that they were married

Only a cert would prove they were married....................as with ANY couple.

Golden rule of FH.............never assume ;-)
