The Margaret Fairclough whose baptism is posted is unlikely to be the one who married James Dennett.

The baptism is C of E.

James and 'his' Margaret were RC, as per Thomas's baptism

I'm adding to this thread so as not to cause repetition.

I have Thomas Dennett born 1848 married to Anne Birchall.
In 1871 census Thomas and Anne are shown with two children - Louisa b. 1869 (my direct ancestor) and May b. 1871
I couldn't find any reference to May anywhere else but I did find a Mary Dennett b. 1871 with father Thomas. This Mary died 5 months old on 2 June 1871. Could Mary be May?
I also found a Thomas Dennett b. 15 January 1872 with mother, Anne (formerly Birchall), but I've been unable to find Thomas anywhere after the birth. I suspected he'd died but the only death I can find that seems possible is June qtr 1872, Prescot 08B/385 age 0. Could this be my Thomas?

May was born as Mary: May is often a "pet" form of Mary - as in the case of my own mother, officially Mary, but always known as May.

Birth:
DENNETT, MARY mmn BIRCHALL
GRO Reference: 1871 M Quarter in PRESCOT Volume 08B Page 641

The death you found seems very likely.

Death:

Re Thomas:

Birth:
DENNETT, THOMAS mmn BIRCHALL
GRO Reference: 1872 M Quarter in PRESCOT Volume 08B Page 660

?? Death - again, very likely:

DENNETT, THOMAS 0
GRO Reference: 1872 J Quarter in PRESCOT Volume 08B Page 385

But the only way to know for sure is to buy the death certs.

On page 2, LondonBelle posted 1891 census for Thomas with children James and Margaret.

Thanks.
I suspected that May and Mary might be one and the same.

Of course, when I go into the GRO site the only death not showing a mother’s maiden name is the one I think is Thomas! I guess I’m going to have to get that certificate.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 8 Nov 2021 08:30

GRO website doesn't show mother's maiden name on any death records - only on births.

I now have the death certificate mentioned above for Thomas and it's not my Thomas. This death certificate shows that he was the son of George Dennett and died age 7 months. I guess I'm back to square one. The only other death in the Prescot registration district is again in 1872 but he was 3 years old when he died.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 11 Nov 2021 17:21

Hmmm - that's a pity.

For our reference - the family in 1881 with no sign of Thomas.

Annie had died in 1876.:

Louisa Dennett
in the 1881 England Census
Name: Louisa Dennett
Age: 12
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1869
Relationship to Head: Daughter
Father: Thos. Dennett
Gender: Female

There's this burial as a possibility:

Thomas Dennett
in the England, Select Deaths and Burials, 1538-1991
Name: Thomas Dennett
Gender: Male
Death Age: 0
Birth Date: 1872
Death Date: abt 1872
Burial Date: 14 Jan 1872
Burial Place: Prescot, Lancashire, England
FHL Film Number: 1657598
Reference ID: Pg145 Ln1154

I wonder if the age of the child in the death record below was 3 weeks rather than 3 years as implied:

DENNETT, THOMAS 3
GRO Reference: 1872 M Quarter in PRESCOT Volume 08B Page 428

If not, then there's no other death record to relate to the burial.

I've ordered the death certificate for the 3 year old Thomas on the off-chance that it might be him. Fingers crossed.

The burial on 14 January 1872 is definitely not him as he wasn't born until 15 January 1872!

There's also this death, of a child who definitely was 3 years old:

I've just received the death certificate for the 3 year old Thomas and it looks like it is my Thomas. It says he died on 5 September 1875 at the age of 3 years 8 months, and since my Thomas was born in January 1872 it looks like it could be the one. The informant was given as Thomas Dennett, father, potmaker at glassworks. Everything seems to fit.
