Looking for Alexander Holliday born at 4. Temperley Place, Hexham Northumberland 25 June 1888 he was educated at Carlisle Grammar School where he was when the 1901 census was taken.

He appears to have joined the Merchant Navy as an apprentice 31 October 1905 at the age of 17 he is reported to stayed there until 1909, after that searches of all records show nothing.

It was said many years ago that he had left the family home after getting involved with a village girl from Corbridge where the family lived from 1894 onwards, in the Carlisle Grammar School book of 1901 it notes that Alexander had joined at the spring term but had left in July and reportedly had gone to America.

David Walton.

Just looking at the Carlisle Grammar School register.

If he left July 1901 and went to America then as he was 13 it would seem logical that the family went. Would he really have gone on his own at that age?

In case it's useful, birth date 25 June 1888.

Hi I have all those links except the waiter on the ship, I have also gone through the local newspaper from 1901-1912 but nothing. I also have a copy of his Father's obituary in December 1935 and there is no mention of him.

David ................

just so you know, the helpers tend to post information as they find it, eg a census or two, as that helps us all to get our heads round the details of this man.

You've been working on him for years, we're coming to it blind.

So think of the work duplicated as being help for US

If he was due to finish his apprenticeship in April 1909, then my posting looks like it could very well be your man as event date is 5 April 1909 and this was the date he is noted as being finished his service on the ship Idomeneus.
Doesn't help find him afterwards but does give you a little more info on him.
