(got a feeling above family might tie in somewhere also, thought the Draper surname rang a bell!)

Hi
Thank you for all your help, we did think my fathers side did coming from travellers.
I have seen my nan's birth cert in the past, and from what I can remember it said her dad was john draper, but I cant remember what it said her mum's name was, iv got my dad looking for it. The only uncle I new was John Draper. We new they moved around a lot. My dad says from what he can remember, his mum ( Elizabeth Draper/Parker) was staying at his at his nan's house and that is how she met his dad, but we don't know why she was staying there. She and my granddad got married at Milton church Sittingbourne, on Christmas day I think in 1929.

I did a quick google and discovered that some of the Romany Drapers also called themselves Parker (or visa versa).

It's possible your family are connected to this line (Etty being Hester/ Esther):

1881 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription
Stanbridge Road, Haddenham, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England

Nelson Parker Head Married Male 35 1846 Travelling Tinkers Or Gipsies -
Naomi Parker Wife Married Female 35 1846 Travelling Tinkers Or Gipsies -
Myrena Parker Daughter Single Female 18 1863 Travelling Tinkers Or Gipsies -
Abraham Parker Son Single Male 13 1868 Travelling Tinkers Or Gipsies -
Etty Parker Daughter Single Female 10 1871 Travelling Tinkers Or Gipsies -
Spencer Parker Son Single Male 7 1874 Travelling Tinkers Or Gipsies -
Amelacha Parker Daughter Single Female 5 1876 Travelling Tinkers Or Gipsies -
Lemmatina Parker Daughter Single Female 1 1880 Travelling Tinkers Or Gipsies

Much of the family were later known as Draper- and I believe they also descend from Smiths- so ties in nicely with your Hester.

Morning Sharon,

I've had another look at this family this morning- I'm not getting very far. Their absence on the 1901 census makes it more difficult.

I suspect the family were travelling at the time the 1901 was taken. I believe that both Draper and Parker surnames are related to gypsy families- this is further confirmed by the names Nelson and Abraham.

The first logical thing to do is obtain the information from your Grandmother's marriage and birth certificates, both of which could provide extra clues.
The best (cheapest) place to buy certificates, if they can't be found is from the GRO using page and volume numbers from the indexes- if you need any help let us know: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

Talk to your father to see if he remembers any family (aunts/ uncles etc) on his mother's side. The 1911 census states there were 5 children still living, but only 4 are listed with the family- Hester/ Esther also could have had further children after 1911.

A lady called Elizabeth has a database for Romany Gypsy families and has helped quite a few people with their families- it might be worth posting a message on her thread:

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/genealogy_chat/thread/1342925?page=7

Hopefully somebody else might find some extra clues too :-)

1939 register:

Feast Household Place Wood Cottages , Hollingbourne R.D., Kent, England
Richard Feast 27 Apr 1904 Male Farm Labourer Married
Elizabeth ? (could be M) Feast 17 Apr 1905 Female Domestic Duties Unpaid Married
One closed record

Interestingly, there is a travelling Smith family living next door. I have to go out now but will try and have another look in the morning.

Hello Sharon.

Who did Elizabeth marry? Have you got her marriage certificate?

Have you found her on the 1939 register? If not, perhaps we can have a look.
