Malcolm Report 3 Jan 2018 22:25

Hi.
I am looking for any information on my great grandfather James Doolan born approx 1875 -1880 who was in the Irish free state in 1940 and in the army.
I know of two daughters:
Mary Elizabeth Doolan born 1899 and married Charles Wallin in Gosport Hants UK in 1920.
Dorothy Helen Doolan born 1915 who married George Nicholls in Quetta India in 1940.

I have contacted the Irish Military Archives Cathal Barracks Dublin, but they have several James Doolan and require further information.

Regards
Malcolm.

Malcolm...Have you any idea where James or the children were born..?

When you say he was in the Irish Free State 1940 and in the Army...do you mean he was living in the Republic and /or was in the Free State Army...

Thank you for all your replies and information, and advice from Cynthia.

My problem is I only have what was on my grandmother marriage cert as her father is in the army, I have always assumed that this was in the Irish free state, as Dorothys marriage cert states that she is from the IFS.

Marys marriage to Charles Wallin cert dated 6th Nov 1920 states father James doolan is a labourer. her address is listed as 140 Clayhall road Alverstoke Gosport Hants.

Dorothys marriage cert dated 19th March 1940 states father is a soldier.
Marys second marriage to George Herbert Winchester dated 5th Aug 1944 states father is a soldier.her address is listed as 48 Angerstein rd North End Portsmouth Hants.

It is possible James Doolan was in the British army.
My grand mother Mary Elizabeth Doolan was born in 1898 so I have only gone back approx 20 years for my great grandfathers possible age.
Grandmother Mary died young in 1955.

The memories from my own parents is that she was Irish.

Regards
Malcolm.

Hello Malcolm,

How do you know Mary was born in 1898? The 1939 register, and her death in 1956, suggest her birth was in 1902.

How do you know Dorothy was Mary's sister. Where/ when did Dorothy die?

Hi Austin Q

On her marriage cert to charles Wallin on 6th Nov 1920 cert states she is 21. DOB would be 1898/99

On her marriage cert to George Winchester on 13th Dec 1956 cert states she is 54 , DOB would be 1898/99

On her death cert dated 13th Dec 1956 her age is 54. DOB would be 1902.
As I cannot find her birth cert, it could be either dates.

I have a number of photos of Dorothy in Quatta India were she married George Nicholls who was a sergeant in the Royal Signals.

I have always thought of Dorothy as Marys sister, they do share the same James Doolan on their marriage certificates and he is stated as a soldier on both certs.

Regards
Malcolm

Are you aware of any children of Dorothy and George R Nicholls? There is a possible daughter, Fiona, born in 1943 Quetta.

It's possible that Fiona married in the UK.

I'm pretty sure that James would be in the British Army. Unfortunately not all Army documents survive.

Although very much a Naval town now, there were Army barracks a plenty in the Gosport / Alverstoke areas.

Perhaps that's where/how Dorothy met her husband and followed him out to India.

Hi Austin Q

Dorothy may have had a daughter called Susan and relocated to ESHER after the war.
This is hear say, problem is both my parents and grandparents have passed away years ago and the Doolans were never talked about.

Malcolm.
