Glyn Report 4 Apr 2018 18:33

My great great grandfather was Christopher Greenaway (1857-1919). His father was Christopher, and so was his grandfather. Unfortunately I have been unable to find out much about the other Christopher’s or their wives.
So Christopher was married to Elizabeth Jones ( 1854-1904) and then later Lavinia Emily Baker (1857-1926). Christopher and Elizabeth had 3 sons, and I know about them, but I can’t find out anything about Elizabeth Jones....Jones is rather popular in Wales!!!
Christopher 2 (1823-?) and his wife Leah Davies had 8 children. I found them on 1861 and 1871 census, but no date of death, and no history of Leah.
Christopher 3 (1798-?) and Kathleen Matthias (1800-?) I know nothing about.
Can anyone help me with these Welsh relatives please?
Thank you
Glyn

Not seeing a death for Elizabeth in 1904- as Chris says, you have Christopher's second marriage in 1903.

Wondered if this was Elizabeth's death:

If Leah's POB as given in 1861 census is correct, this might be a possibility for her in 1841.

Thanks Chris- the Elizabeth Gronoway death is 3rd qtr- so she would still be recorded on 1901 census.

Wow thanks folks. I don’t have the marriage certificate Chris. Haven’t got that far.
The newspaper site you recommended was helpful. Thanks
I’m amazed how many different spellings Greenaway gets given!!!
I haven’t followed up on all of the details yet, but the 1841 census for Leah is very helpful and the info about Mary Greenaway. Didn’t know that.
AQ no that’s not my relative. I did think Sarah and Christopher were at one time, and spend some time pursuing that lead, but no.
My biggest problem is that each generation had lots of children, and Samuel, Edward, Christopher, and John in particular appear once, twice or even three times in the same generation as the sons call their children by the same names!!!
They all seem to be in Monmouthshire and Glamorgan areas, and are all miners!!
So, forgive the pun, it’s a minefield trying to work out who is directly related to me.
You’ve all done amazingly well so far.
Whether I will find out more than Christopher and Leah I’m not sure.
All I have for the next generation is Christopher 1798 and Kathleen Mathias 1800, but that’s not confirmed.
Definitely Elizabeth sounds right for her death as I checked back through my facts, and found I’d written after 1901 not 1904 as I misread it.
I don’t think the 1831 DOB for Christopher is my relative either AQ.
I appreciate all the suggestions and will try to follow those through. Any more please keep them coming. Thanks
Glyn

I'm surprised that the 1881 census is not correct. I don't see another birth for Samuel Greenaway/ Greenway in the area at that time.

GREENWAY, SAMUEL (mmn: DAVIES)
GRO Reference: 1865 D Quarter in MERTHYR TYDFIL Volume 11A Page 318
(This child died 1866)

GREENWAY, SAMUEL (mmn: DAVIES )
GRO Reference: 1867 D Quarter in MERTHYR TYDFIL Volume 11A Page 332

If that is not your Samuel on the 1881 census, then I'm having trouble spotting him- unless he's transcribed under a variation I haven't tried.
