Hi, am trying to unravel a mystery for my cousin this time! This is regarding Frederick St John Lacy, who lived in Cork, 1862 - 1935, and was famous as Professor of Music at Cork University. My cousin's grandmother, Delia Reid, 1915 - 1970 approx., lived Middleton Co Cork - we are trying to find a connection between her and Frederick. Thought may be grandmother's uncle?
Many thanks
Maureen

Start by finding the full names of Delia's parents. As she was your cousin's grandmother, one assumes that Reid was her married name..........

Only with parental information to hand can you hope to find out if there is a blood connection

Thanks ErikaH and Argyllgran again!!! It's my cousins husband with query - feels that Delia Reid never married. Have been researching for him, but all I have found is a Delia Reid, birthplace Ireland, immigrating to New York 1956, on ship Nassau. Will inquire further to him, but all complicated! Will get back. We don't know who Frederick married, and just a few months before his death - maybe a Housekeeper? Would have thought as famous Professor of Music, may have had money? Found probate for him on Ancestry but unable to access it. Yes, interesting that Louisa Browne (nee Treacey) was his Aunt? Any info greatly appreciated. Regards Maureen

If Delia was his grandmother, a child of hers must have been his parent, unless, of course, adoption is involved.

And you still need the names of her parents..............

I can't see the migration record to which you refer - how old was the lady at the time?

Just enquired and Mary Murphy was my cousins mother. Her mother, Delia Reid, was forced to give her away as she was illegitimate.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 13 Aug 2018 14:47

In that case, your chances of finding info are not good - you need documentation, and there is unlikely to be any

When was Mary Murphy born?

How does she know the name of her birth mother?

Maureen

Maureen Report 13 Aug 2018 15:01

More info: Mary was registered as Murphy in 1936 on birth certificate - and funnily married a Murphy so still Mary Murphy, but believe she was adopted by Burns family.

Maureen

Maureen Report 13 Aug 2018 15:16

I'm told definitely Delia Reid who never married was cousins grandmother. He actually met her in 1960's - she died in 1970.

If you can find her birth and get a copy cert, you may have a chance ofworking backwards

You haven't said how old Delia Reid was on the 1956 record

Didn't have age on 1956 immigration to NY. She was born 1915 and died around 1970.

Taken from the Cork Review, June 1992.

TOG What about your music at this time?
AF': Lacy was my mentor. He was of a Blackrock family - Frederick St. John Lacy. In his youth he got same disease and his feet never grew. He had a fine body and a fine head, but the lower half of his body was dwarf-like. He could only walk on crutches. Despite that he went to London. He had a good voice and was a very popular singer to his own accompaniment - so popular that he was made President of the prestigious Savage Club in London. He used to tell me about being host at a big dinner, when the Duke of Con-naught was his chief guest.

Once, when in London, I had an appointment with a librarian, from whom I was hiring music for my orchestra. He brought me to The Savage Club, on the walls of which were pictures of past presidents. Who did I see there but Lacy. So I said to my man, who was a member of the club: 'do you know who that president is?' (there were no names on the portraits) He checked with the secretary of the club, but nobody knew. I told him; 'that's Professor Lacy of UCC.'
Lacy was very pedantic: his lectures largely consisted of expounding Prout's book on harmony and Kitson's on counterpoint. Then you did the exercises and with enormous labour he'd play what you wrote, sighing and heaving, trying to get his hands around it. But 1 must say he was very devoted to his work and I got on well with him, gaining first honours in all the exams. One day his housekeeper let me into a big secret: 'you're going to be his heir and you'll be very well-off.' Some months later, however, the housekeeper answered the door, looking rather crestfallen, and said to me: 'I'm afraid he's fallen for one of his students and is going to marry her'.

He had retired at this time, so he must have been over seventy, though he still gave lessons. A singer of about twenty-eight fell for him completely - she worshipped him. They married and she sold off his library, an enormous one, and the College bought most of it. I had already got his job by then. Quite a number of the scores I now have derive from Lacy - I bought them from his widow.

This will be the record you mean, I think:

Delia Reed
in the New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
Name: Delia Reed
Arrival date: 20 Jul 1956
Birth Location: Connecticut
Birth Location Other: Hartford
Port of Departure: New York
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Nassau

However, as well as the different spelling of her surname, the image gives her birthplace as both Ireland 1929, and Hartford, Connecticut - so it doesn't look as if she's your Delia.
