Edward armstrong married Annie hill in the 1920s and he was a hairdresser too but after his brother John death on 26th oct 1932 which edward was in the belfast telegraph, i cant find him or if he had his own family. It would be great to get any pics or stories from anyone who remembered the Armstrongs from Weir st. Edenderry St and James st in the 1900s onwards as im at a dead end so soon with this family branch and cant go any further back.

Yes, it's on irishgenealogy.
That's where Greyghost found it.

sharonrose Report 3 Feb 2019 23:33

Thank you I will look birth up in irishgeneolgy to see if has birth cert. Never thought they might not of married before birth. I did take james to marry 2nd wife 20 years after Edward was born but sarah always put on records she was armstrong and all their children were named armstromg too before marriage in 1923.

Greyghost has posted the birth of James Martin 1882, born at Ligoneil.

Son of Eliza Martin; no father named.
Born before her marriage.

We can't say for sure that Eliza Martin was your James's mother, or that James Martin 1882 is your James Armstrong - but it seems like a good bet.

sharonrose Report 3 Feb 2019 00:26

Thank you for your time. From the marriage in April 1883 you think Eliza Martin is his mother? I just dont understand how I cant find his birth record which would be great help. On census it said he was born ligoneil Belfast

ArgyllGran Report 2 Feb 2019 11:53

I had already mentally settled on the Martin marriage, because of the Ligoneil connection, and James's birth details seem to confirm that, GG.

Looking at one of the marriages suggested by AG - James Armstrong and Eliza Martin.
The image shows it was by Licence at Ballysillan (next door to Ligoneil )in the Parish of Shankhill, in the County of Antrim at the Presbyterian Church. Both were of full age. Witnesses - Rebecca Martin and Robert Wilson.

???? was James born pre marriage of his Mother and she then married James Armstrong who may (or may not) have been the Father??

JAMES MARTIN
Date of Birth 1882
Group Registration ID 9411450

Mother's Birth Surname N/R

From original -
born 29 October 1882 at Bodels Row, Legoneil <<<<<<<<
James Martin - No Father listed, Mother Eliza Martin <<<<<<<<<

(Haven't tried the same exercise with the other marriage AG suggested)

on james death 1922 didnt show birth which would of helped he was 40 when died and buried in shankill graveyard but on the records doesnt show his half brother john being buried in 1932 in shankill graveyard but said it in paper. I did see a martin grave in same grave yard but elizabeth was buried in city cementry but these are the three i cant find birth records or marriage so my Armstrong tree stops here thats why i was looking for edward to see if his records showed anything regarding his dad but after 1932 ambleside st cant find where he went or if had children.

sharonrose Report 1 Feb 2019 23:11

in titanic employees shows james armstrong 1912 weir st born 1881 engineer so if Eliza Martin may not be the marriage as in 1883 unless james born wrong. I have checked other one before but i know from marriage of James snr in think november 1923 to sarah his dad was James too.

My last post was at the same time as your last one, so you may not have noticed the marriage I posted, where both parties were resident at Ligoneil ??

Bride - Eliza Martin.

Just a possibility.

thank you all for helping. Micheal was 1st husband of Sarah i found she married james armstrong 1923 but used name barnes and not mcbarron. I dont know why all ages changes on census in 1901 sancroft st shows 40 for james a cementer shipyard and wifes 37 but on her death burial shows 35 which makes her 2 years younger. would orginal cementry records not have birth. I notice they wrote arnott as surname then crossed out and put armstrong on her city cementry grave record

I don't see a likely marriage for James and Elizabeth in or near Glasgow in a feasible year.

If Elizabeth's age of 37 in 1901 is correct, she was 19 when James junior was born, so would have to have married 1880-83 - assuming they married before James's birth..

James's age on his death cert fits with his age on 1911 census, so presumably born c1862.

1911 census says he's Presbyterian, while the rest of the family is Church of Ireland. (Just in case that turns out to be a helpful clue to anything!)
