By manipulating the Scotland's People website you can see the following

There is only 1 Mary Ann Stewart showing in Brechin in 1911

Surname Forename Year Gender Age at Census Ref RD Name County/ City
STEWART MARY ANN 1911 F 37 275/ 2/ 15 Brechin Angus

------------------------
the only Alexander on that same reference number
STEWART ALEXANDER 1911 M 0 275/ 2/ 15 Brechin Angus

-----------------------
This David aged 4 (you say born 1908 so should show as aged 2 or 3)

STEWART DAVID 1911 M 4 275/ 2/ 15 Brechin Angus

-----------------------
and also on the same Ref. No
STEWART DAVID 1911 M 35 275/ 2/ 15 Brechin Angus

You will have to register with the site (free) and buy credits to look at the full census entry - it is not available anywhere else. Credits are £7.50 for 30, initial trawl as above van be done for free, the 6 credits to view full details.

The 1911 census for Scotland is only on Scotlands People website.
Although, as Shirley correctly says, it's a site where you have to buy credits, it's possible to do a free basic search by manipulating the known info, but you'd have to buy credits to view the image and see all the details.

Could be this family??
If so, Mary Ann seems to have a husband David (but he could be a brother - you'd have to view the image to be sure).

When you say "husband unknown", do you mean that no father is named on the children's birth certs, or just that you personally don't know his name?

Had a few credits on that site so took a look but I don't know how to get a transcription ??

This is what it shows but I can't quite read all the birthplaces - all the children are Brechin - Mary A is Forfar ? and David looks like Lei?? somewhere in Forfarth??

1911:
12 b. City Rd., Brechin
David Stewart Head 35 surfaceman on Railway
Mary Ann Stewart wife 37 mar. 7 yrs. 6 children born, 4 still alive.
James Duncan son 17 Bleacher at Bleachfield
Charles Duncan son 16 Bobbin Whipper? at Spinning Mill
David Stewart son 4
Alexander Stewart son 6 months

I will try to save the image to keepsakes later and post you the link.

Hope this helps,

Dea x

Maybe possibly David's death - I don't know what the second middle name is - you'd have to buy a copy of the cert to see that, unfortunately.

David Duncan Stewart was born on 30th March 1908 at 99 River St., Brechin to David Stewart (General Labourer) and Mary Ann Stewart (maiden name Duncan). They were apparently married in 1904 on 30th December in Brechin. (That is what it says on David's 1908 birth registration).
