I have an Elizabeth Briggs born 1801 at St Mary's in Nottingham. I think her mother was Jane Briggs. The last time I have found her in a census as Elizabeth Briggs is 1841 in Southwell. I can't find any marriage records after this date for her but I have found a record of a death in 1842 in Southwell, volume 15, page 417, line 55. Is there any where I can search to try and determine if this is my Elizabeth or do I have to order the death certificate to progress further?

Robert Briggs is Elizabeth's son, he was born in Nottinghamshire in 1832. He marries Charlotte Holmes in Sept 1860 at Chesterfield. On his marriage certificate it says he was a widower, I can't find a previous marriage after 1851 (he was single in the census) and before 1860. I wonder if anyone can help please.

Are you certain this is Elizabeth's son? Your post implies she wasn't married when Robert was born

As you haven't found Elizabeth after 1841, can you say how you know exactly where she was born, please.

(says his Father Robert is a Publican, on that 1860 Marriage. Residence for Both, Eyre Street)

Seems a bit confusing!...

Yes she is def Roberts mother. It says single mum where I found the record. I started researching this tree quite a few years ago now and had to leave it because I couldn't work Elizabeth out or get any further back. I've just decided to try and pick it up again.

Some one who helped me at the time said that it was most likely that he lied on the marriage certificate since he was born to a single mum.

Erika, I know she was born 1801 because my father in law has a prayer book which used to be hers. In it is an inscription for her birth which was 1801. The book was signed by a rev. Dr berdsmore that I found was a past vicar at the church she was born in in 1801. Her mother who I think was Jane Briggs was also born at the church when rev berdsmore was actually a vicar there.

So I'm more or less sure that is her. :-)

Where was the Record found, Birth of Robert 1832?...

Chris :)

Julia

Julia Report 20 Nov 2019 20:22

Chris, Charlotte and Robert already had a child when they married so I think that's why they were living in the same address already.

I have the marriage certificate for the Sarah hollis marriage as I thought it could have been the marriage but as you say the father is John Briggs so that doesn't talky either.

This is why I've left it for so many years now! :-D

That's fine

Was just checking because the 1841, as you know, doesn't record birthplace info

Have you considered that the woman on 1841 isn't 'your' Elizabeth Briggs?

Robert isn't with her, so it may be a different woman

If this is Robert's burial, his age is a year 'out' compared with his baptism
