Flora married Gulielmus F (William) Nugent
10 Jan 1938 RC St. Augustine, Coatbridge, Glasgow.

Her parents given as:
Hugonis (Hugh) McGregor and Flora Gilman

Possible date of birth 23 May 1919 (info supplied by friend who is looking for her family)

Friend thinks Flora had siblings John, Robbie (Robert), Jimmy (James) plus A.N.Other

Flora married 3/4 times but she knows the Nugent name is correct.

Can anyone find baptism records for either Flora or any of the siblings please? She has no idea of the birth dates but thinks Flora was the eldest.

John McGregor is the critical person she needs to trace.

Friend knows the siblings were in England by the 1940s, she remembers visiting her relatives in the late 1950s.

Sorry to be so vague :-(

Thanks Sue

Possibly Flora's birth. You'd have to buy a copy of the certificate via Scotlands People to check parents' names and exact DOB.

MCGREGOR
FLORA GILMOUR
F
1919
644/17 508
Gorbals

Probably her parents' marriage - note mms Gilmour, not Gilman:

MCGREGOR
HUGH
GILMOUR
FLORA
1896
644/14 306
Kinning Park

Unfortunately mms can't be used as a search term for Scottish births after 1854, so it's not possible to pick out her siblings' births from the large number of McGregors born in Glasgow and surrounding area.

There are a few with middle name Gilmour - but we can't assume all the children had that middle name, nor exactly where in Glasgow they might have been born.

If only they had more unusual names than John, Robert, and James !

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 29 Dec 2019 18:11

With big assumptions - ie - that Coatbridge is relevant, and that their middle names were Gilmour - there are these births which MIGHT be possibles:

MCGREGOR
JOHN GILMOUR
M
1908
652/2 805
Coatbridge or Old Monkland

MCGREGOR
JAMES GILMOUR
M
1910
652/2 470
Coatbridge or Old Monkland

And as Flora was born in the Gorbals, there are also two Roberts' born there:

MCGREGOR
ROBERT GILMOUR
M
1916
644/17 899
Gorbals

MCGREGOR
ROBERT GILMOUR
M
1925
644/17 243
Gorbals

For the 1925 birth, you'd have to buy a copy of the cert (£12), but for the earlier ones you can view/print the image of the original document for 6 credits on SP (buy minimum 30 credits for £7.50) .

And please note - these are only guesses. They may not be the right children.

1901 census shows a son Hugh born 1899/1900 in Glasgow

Parents born 1876 and 1878

NO, forget the Coatbridge births of James and John.
Looking at the 1911 census, I see that their parents names were Helen and John.

Wow thanks both, that's further than I got today.

Friend does think the Gilmor/Gilmour name is significant so that fits with her 'knowledge' which was passed on by her late Mother with the caveat that her Mother was very secretive.

I'll pass this info on.

Many thanks

There's this family in the Gorbals in 1911 - parents Flora and Hugh, and a son Hugh as mentioned by Erika - but also other children, who don't include a James , a Robert, or a John:

and possibly Hugh ??

Thanks Gran,

Everything is very helpful. Friend will order certs in order of importance to confirm basics.

Desperately need John's DOB so I can then trace his military records which should hold the key to other mysteries.

Where in England were the McGregors when your friend visited them in the late 50s?

Is this where the 1919 birth date comes from, although a few days off what you listed?

To have a chance of finding John, we need Rose's question answered -
where were the McGregor siblings when your friend visited them?

Friend says she remembers visiting family members in and around Ruislip and Uxbridge.

I have a copy of court papers here which give John's address in 1955 as Carlyon Place, Brentford, Middx. Confirmed by police who served papers there.

In 1965 he was at Clayponds Gardens, South Ealing.

Both resulting from complaints and judgements under the bastardy laws.

No idea if that helps or not.

Without his DOB I cannot pin down which John McGregor/MacGregor he is in the POW (Poland) records. Where he died and equally importantly if he married!
