Marriage of Thomas James ??

Marriages Sep 1913 (>99%)
Dallaway Edith Poultney Walsall 6b 1366
Poultney Thomas J W Dallaway Walsall 6b 1366

EDIT:

NO, this couple are together in 1939, and as ErikaH points out below, your Thomas was only Thomas J, not Thomas J W.

ErikaH Report 4 Mar 2021 17:23

He was Thomas J...no third name, and died aged 18, as per info posted....in Dudley district

Thomas James W was born 1885 in West Bromwich.

Oh yes, I was looking at Thomas's birth by mistake instead of his death, and thinking Witts was a middle name - duh!

Thanks, i did see the death for Thomas Hill, I noticed when looking into the Plant side of the family there were Hill's surname so maybe they took him on for some reason as he was born illegitimate. Thank you all. Still a mystery of when Florence died. Sounds like she had a right struggle in life with all these illegitimate births. I have found Margaret A Poultneys (The one that was in the alleged cruelty record) daughter on Facebook and sent a message but she hasn't looked at it as it's probably gone into a secret file. This was before it was confirmed that she was Florence's daughter.

1000s of records have been deposited for archive at Birmingham University,,,,,,,it maybe worth a delve to see if any records exsist of New Cross Inst,of discharge they may be able to assit if the entry is over 75 year old,,,,,,,, it could be found when Florence left the New Cross,

CHARGE OF CHILD NEGLECT. Florence Louisa Poultney, a single woman, of 5, Great Hill, was charged at Dudley yesterday with neglecting her child. aged seven months.
The child was found to be in an extremely emaciated condition and suffering from bronchitis and when removed by an inspector of the NSPCC to the Workhouse infirmary, it was so ill the nurse was afraid to weigh it.
The defendant, who was bound over for 12 months, said she had to work all day, and was the main support of the home.

08 January 1921 - Birmingham Daily Gazette - Birmingham, Warwickshire, England

The poor woman seems to have been all on her own and desperately in need of help. We are so lucky that things have improved so much in our lifetimes.

It's awful isn't it, i just found that article as well. We just don't know what was going on. She was in a workhouse and kept on having babies by the looks of things. We don't know if Doris, that was born in 1930 was taken off her straight away or she kept her for a while. My sisters ex husband is going to order the records at Dr Barnardo's as soon as all this covid stuff has finished so should find out more. Thanks for all your help everyone, it's a sad read but answers a lot of questions to why Doris ended up in care.

I looked at the births on www.freebmd.org.uk and found what I think is the birth registration of Doris Poultney. This birth was registered at Dudley in the June quarter (April, May, June) of 1930, volume 6b, page number 1581. It suggests to me that Florence was not married at the time of this birth because the child was registered in her maiden name. A copy of this certificate would confirm this hypothesis and also give the address where the birth took place.

From the information in your email it would appear that 9 years later in 1939, still not married, Florence was a patient in New Cross Hospital and is described as “incapacitated”. This suggests to me that she was incapable of looking after herself and had been admitted to the hospital because of severe mental/psychiatric or physical illness. Above her surname is the word ‘Gray’ which should indicate a marriage but neither myself nor a colleague have been able to find one, or a death in either name, which is a bit of a mystery and so frustrating and we don’t hold any patient records for New Cross Hospital to check either.

If you haven’t already done so it might be worth contacting Barnardo’s to get Doris’ records as they might give some information into the background circumstances surrounding her placement there. My understanding is that the records they keep are quite detailed so they might provide some clues for further research.

I’m sorry I can’t be of more help with your enquiry this time, it is one of the joys of genealogy that occasionally there is one person who seems determined not to found and has vanished.

Sincerely
