I am trying to trace the family of the above, he arrived in New Zealand about 1882-1884. So far I have been unable to find him in the UK census, or arrivals in New Zealand. The family has a long history in the music field, composing, organists etc.

Further to my query above, thank you all who have replied, I really appreciate it.

His christian names were William Henry Webbe (not Porter)
I now know his wife's name was Alice and she was born about 1848 according to her death notice in N.Z.

They also had children how many I dont know that died before Alice joined William in N.Z.

William made the journey to NZ first on his own, about 1880-1882 then may of returned to bring Alice out or arranged for her to travel out on her own. He also made trips to England to Buy Pianos as he had a shop in Auckland selling them, as well as teaching the piano.

Which site(s) are you using for your searches?

Did he marry? Did he name a father on his marriage cert?

Online travel records don’t start until 1890

How do you know he was born in London?

Assuming that the birth may have been registered as Webb there are a number of possibilities:

1853 Wandsworth. 1854 St. George’s Southwark and East London
1855 Poplar. 1856 Edmonton 1857 Stepney

That’s what I found. So I find it a bit strange that the title didn’t appear to go to male relations.

The article above says that WH's grandfather Henry, who was Sir Henry's cousin, met with a fatal accident soon after Sir Henry's death so did not inherit.
"It is however not likely the title will again be assumed owing to the democratic proclivities of the subject of our sketch."

WH had a volume containing the family history dating from the 14th century,
