I am trying to trace the family of the above, he arrived in New Zealand about 1882-1884. So far I have been unable to find him in the UK census, or arrivals in New Zealand. The family has a long history in the music field, composing, organists etc.

Further to my query above, thank you all who have replied, I really appreciate it.

His christian names were William Henry Webbe (not Porter)
I now know his wife's name was Alice and she was born about 1848 according to her death notice in N.Z.

They also had children how many I dont know that died before Alice joined William in N.Z.

William made the journey to NZ first on his own, about 1880-1882 then may of returned to bring Alice out or arranged for her to travel out on her own. He also made trips to England to Buy Pianos as he had a shop in Auckland selling them, as well as teaching the piano.

Do you where or when he was born or what the first names actually are?

ErikaH Report 21 Sep 2021 09:58

Which site(s) are you using for your searches?

Did he marry? Did he name a father on his marriage cert?

Online travel records don’t start until 1890

How do you know he was born in London?

His birth may not have been registered- it was pre-1875

nameslessone Report 21 Sep 2021 12:06

Assuming that the birth may have been registered as Webb there are a number of possibilities:

1853 Wandsworth. 1854 St. George’s Southwark and East London
1855 Poplar. 1856 Edmonton 1857 Stepney

biography born feb 1856 london and history

alviegal Report 21 Sep 2021 12:27

New Zealand papers have him as being born in London Feb 1856 and emigrated in 1883. His grandfather was called Henry and was a cousin of Sir Henry (Webbe) a baronet of Oddestoke? who died in 1874.

alviegal Report 21 Sep 2021 12:38

Madoleine's mother was called Alice and she died 17 Apr 1933 at Helensville.

EDIT She was aged 85 so c1848.

ErikaH Report 21 Sep 2021 12:41

Madoleine was born in NZ in 1886

alviegal Report 21 Sep 2021 12:43

His obituary but no family in England mentioned. Came over in 1884 seemingly.

nameslessone Report 21 Sep 2021 12:54

Sir Henry Webb, 7th.baron of Webb, odstock, Wiltshire died in 1874 and the title died with him.

alviegal Report 21 Sep 2021 12:55

So this is a list of the baronets that he was connected to.

Sir Henry Webb, 7th Bt.
27 Apr 1806
19 Aug 1874

On the death of the 7th Baronet the Baronetcy of Webb of Odstock, co. Wiltshire, became extinct.

nameslessone Report 21 Sep 2021 13:00

That’s what I found. So I find it a bit strange that the title didn’t appear to go to male relations.

alviegal Report 21 Sep 2021 13:13

The article above says that WH's grandfather Henry, who was Sir Henry's cousin, met with a fatal accident soon after Sir Henry's death so did not inherit.
"It is however not likely the title will again be assumed owing to the democratic proclivities of the subject of our sketch."

WH had a volume containing the family history dating from the 14th century,
