Have you found James on a census?

(Free on https://www.familysearch.org/search)

Why are you unsure about his birthplace?

How did you discover that James’s father was called Henry?

Please tell us all you know, so we aren’t having to guess.

thank you for answering, i was given a loosely written family tree on a piece of paper
and im trying to find out more. I have found a census for James and his wife and children but cant get anything earlier that would include his father Henry.
Ive found lots of Henrys but so far they dont match. im thinking that he would of been born around 1850 to have a son born in 1873, so ive been looking in that area.
The reason why Ive put the london area is because his family after him lived in Middlesex/uxbridge area.
His son James william wicks married Emily Wynn ( born 1878 ) they were married in 1900.
Thats all i know so far.

Do you have a copy of the marriage certificate? This would not only give you the fathers name but also his occupation - which might prove helpful in finding him.
Edit: re the earlier marriage post. William Wicks, age 27, was a labourer as was his father, Henry.

If that’s his birth, he was illegitimate, and you will never know who his father was.

William lived at 65 Station Rd, Chertsey :-) Emily at Friary St, Guildford.

John Arthur Reeves and Fanny Cecilia(?) Foster were witnesses.

Father, Henry, was a labourer not noted as being deceased. I know this could all be fabricated.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 29 Nov 2022 14:00

The birth and baptism clearly indicate illegitimacy - the image of the baptism shows that the vicar started to write the name 'Henry', then crossed it out.

So the father's name may well have been Henry, but his surname was not likely to be Wicks

The mother was recorded as being a servant.
