I joined Ancestry two weeks ago I am utterly confused as other members are tracing the same names in my tree and spouces and dates are all different so im thinking of going back to my grt grandfather willim henry mcdowell b 1847 devon as I have certificates

So how can I prove john mcdowell b 8/20/1815 stoke damerel devon
is his father and william mcdowell b1792 is his grandfather and so on as another person gave me this information

any help appreciated joyce m :-S

I have seen the same info on several trees on Ancestry for the birthplace and marriage for one of my ancestors .all totally wrong because I have the certs to prove my research

It seems someone has assumed and several others have copied it over rather than do their own research

One person I did contact many moons ago got quite aggressive when I pointed out the error and told me I was wrong
I don't bother now doing any contact when I see obvious wrong info

I am thinking of cancelling it as I still have time

How do you check family surnames before 1766 Ireland

and 1706 Scotland which I was given by a relative

as I would prefer more proof

For Scotland you'll need Scotlands People:

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

You can do a basic search free, but to see details you'll need to buy credits. You can view images of original documents, and print them.

But first try FamilySearch, which is free, and has some Scottish records, as does Ancestry. You might be lucky with them. If not, then SP is the site to use.

On FS, make sure you search "Records" and not "Family Trees", which are no more reliable than Ancestry trees

Irish records are trickier.

Family Search again might help.

Is 7/3/1728 Mary's birth date, or their marriage date?
