William Report 23 May 2018 23:31

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could maybe point me in the right direction.

My Great-Grandfather and his Brother were placed into an orphanage in the 1920's due to their Mother's death in the area of Poplar, London. They were split up and my Great-Grandfather never knew what happened to his Brother. He would not talk about this situation when he was alive as he wasn't a very open person. All we were told is that they were placed into an orphanage and my Great-Grandfather ran away from the orphanage leaving his Brother there and never seeing him again.

For years we have been trying to find out what happened to my Great-Grandfathers Brother but we always seem to hit a brick wall.

I have exhausted ancestry searches, been to the London Metropolitan archives, Barnardo's, death certificates, Birth certificates. Children's homes that I thought they may have been in all seem to have no records.

I am still none the wiser as to what actually happened to them both as children, other than what my Great-Grandad had told us.

Does anyone have any advice as to what I can do or where I can go to maybe help me along with my search. If I have missed any details out then please let me know.

Regards
Will

A tree on Ancestry says that your Alfred's DOB was 18 Aug 1924, but doesn't provide proof.
You say you have the birth cert - is that the correct date?.

If you do an address search on the 1939 Register for 76 Finchley Park, Friern Barnet, Frederick J. Mardon is listed (dob 3/1/1870) as a Cook, with a Martha M Wood (dob 17/10/1868) (Housekeeper) living at the same address. I can't find them by any other method - they have obviously been mis-transcribed somehow.

Thank you very much for your help everyone! I'm not sure on how to reply to people individually...

Alfreds Birth date on his Brith Dertificate is the 18th August 1924 so it appears that it is him @Argyllgran thank you very much for your help. It just seems his surname has been spelt en instead of on, which I have noticed when looking through others trees on ancestry with regards to the spelling of Mardon.

@Choccy thank you also for your help. The 1939 census for Frederick John is one I wasn't able to find probably due to the reasons you stated! What's interesting is Frederick Johns Mother was called Martha Wood but with the middle name Celia.... Maybe there is some family connection there between them!

On Ancestry -

Search 1939 Register -

on the right hand side it says 'Browse Collection' - type in County: Middlesex
District: Friern Barnet
Enumeration District: BHAH
You then need to go to Page 14 of 24

Martha Wood and Frederick Mordon are listed at No. 76 Finchley Park

Thank you choccy for your help. Now saved!

Frederick John Mardon was married to an Emily Jane Martin in 1899 but seems to have never gotten divorced from her... Was it not something you could do in those days?

On Bertha Rivetts death certificate he is listed as the informant but has said she is a 'spinster' and also on her admissions to the Poplar & Stepney Sick Asylum he has simply said he was her 'friend' but then on both birth certificates of the boys she has been given the surname Mardon formerly Rivett. :-S

Choccy

Choccy Report 24 May 2018 15:26

Not cheap to get divorced then -

think this is possibly Emily in 1939
