I don't think you'll ever know William Theodore Bastard/Besterd/Basford's father's name.

He may have been named after Susan's brother Theodore, who seems to disappear from records after 1861 - maybe died?:

Depends what newspaper article you're looking for, Laura.

Hardly any of the helpers here use GR for research, though the ERs are useful.

Tell us what you're looking for, and I'm sure someone will be able to help.

Re the illegitimate child Fred , aged 1 on the 1891 census, with Susan (posted on page 1) .

Posting his birth again for ease of reference:

BASTARD, FREDERICK EDWARD GEORGE PAWLEY -
GRO Reference: 1889 J Quarter in ST GERMANS Volume 05C Page 43

He's Pawley in 1901, because his mother Susan married George Pawley - so presumably, in view of of his middle name, his father was George Pawley:

Susan Pawley
in the 1901 England Census
Name: Susan Pawley
Age: 46
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1855
Relation to Head: Wife

Bastard Susan St Germans 5c 77
Pawley George St.Germans 5c 77

He remains Pawley (and with the middle names) in his Royal Navy record 1909-1910; and in 1911 census (waggoner, and farm work).

He joined the Lancashire Hussars Yeomanry in 1914.
1917, transferred to 18th Battalion, King's Liverpool Regiment.
21/03/1918 - POW in Germany.
Released 19/12/1918/

Sallow complexion, grey eyes, brown hair.
Height: 5' 7"

There's a possible marriage in Surrey in February 1918 (a solder, with no middle names, but father's name George ), and death in Surrey in 1945 - but again no middle names. Aged 25 at marriage, and 54 at death.

His army record doesn't detail any leave in Feb 1918, so not sure if this can be him or not.

However, the only other Frederick Pawleys I can see were two born in 1892 -
one in Leicestershire, with no middle names, but his father was also Frederick, and he died in 1907.
The other (with middle names Henry G R) was born in Rochford, Essex, with father Frederick, and he died in 1925.
