As Elizabeth didn't die until 1913, William's 'status' in 1891, when he said he was a widower, was an untruth.

It also raises the question of Elizabeth's whereabouts in that year.

Does the death cert actually say he was aged 50, or give his date of birth?

If so, then the GRO Index must have the wrong age on it, because the Index definitely says the man who died in Stoke Damerel reg district in 1897 was aged 63..

The Probate record for the man who died in March 1897 is on FMP

His estate was in excess of £2000.00 and Probate was granted to two retired Royal Navy officers

Your man was in the workhouse in 1892

I would imagine THIS is the man who died in1897, aged 63

William H. McDowell was charged with improper conduct in tbe Granby Lines that morning. The case was proved by Amelia Turner, housemaid, and Mr Iremonger, house steward at The Royal Albert Hospital. Prisoner, against whom there were four convictions for similar offences at Devonport, Plymouth and Roborough, was sentenced to 3 months hard labour.

'Before the Devonport magistrates yesterday, W. H. McDowall. a tramp, was charged with obtaining food and lodging the 17th August from W. H. Cawsey by false pretences. The Mayor, the magistrates' clerk, and the head constable had ...'

The case was dismissed and the Mayor advised the prisoner to leave town as soon as he could as he had been very lucky.


Now I have no idea if all these reports pertain to the same person or if they are your ancestor but it sounds as if after his first wife died, he struggled and his second marriage doesn't seem to have gone anywhere
