Andy has beaten me to it, I was going to suggest Ulph for Matilda's maiden name. My husband has some Ulphs from Norfolk (Tunstead and Honing parishes from memory).

Unfortunately, still no marriage showing up :( Can anyone else have a look please as I have to get off now - it may be possible the birth is too early for reg and the marriage didnt happen or has been really badly mistransed.

Have to shoot Tracey, dinner to dish up - but just sort out all the info here and then think of another direction to go :) Ive got couples marrying 20 years after the first child.

If you find that the Matilda Ulph aged 4 on the 1841 census is the right one, the family has been mistranscribed as Uffit on the 1851.

On Familysearch there is a baptism of a Matilda Ulph on 09/10/1836 at Hainford,
father: Robert Ulph, mother: Maria Beck, so just too early for Free bmd.

Could be them, Mary and Maria seem to be pretty interchangeable dont they. We seem to be possibly doing ok on the maternal side but didnt Tracey want the info on John Austin's lot?

Tracey, when you say you have the defo baptism on John, was that parish records - did that not give his parents?

In the 1800's an 's' was written as an 'f', so it could possibly be Huls or Hulls.

Looks like John Henry Austin died Mar qtr 1892 aged 53, Chelsea district, ref. 1a 361 (Matilda was a widow on the 1901 census).

Heather Report 15 Oct 2007 19:44

Good thought Tom but I think its the sound that has confused the recorder - she has said Ulph and he probably thought shed dropped the H.

All supposition as yet. Be worth getting that other birth cert to check the spelling again. But as far as a marriage goes :( I guess weve tried Austen for the groom?

POSSIBLE for John in 1851 - rightish area and he is shown as a plasterer's labourer, so a short step to being a house painter?:

Good Morning...

i have slept on everyone's suggestions... was wondering if i should start at the begining again??
but here is what i have, this will show you how i got to where i am...
my nan was an Austin having many siblings
JOHN 1890,WILLIAM 1892, JAMES C1897, CHARLOTTE (LOTTE) C1899, ESTHER ANNIE ( MY NAN) 1901, LAURA MATILDA HARIOTT 1906, BESSIE C1908, ETHEL 1909, ARTHUR C1910 and SIDNEY 1911.( which we never heard of)
Their parents were JOHN AUSTIN 1865 and LAURA COLMAN they married in 1888. JOHN 1865 siblings were ARTHUR 1870, ELIZABETH 1872, ROSETTA 1875 and HENRY 1877... Now this is where i get stuck... i believe that there parents were JOHN HENRY AUSTIN and MATILDA AUSTIN formerly
HULF...

Thanks again
Tracey

Tracey

Tracey Report 16 Oct 2007 10:58

Oh and just to confuse matters LAURA COLMAN is apparently a cousin of some sort to RONALD COLMAN... the 1920's actor... but again wouldn't know where to look...

thanks
Tracey

I think we have covered that Tracey - it seems Matilda was very likely Matilda Ulph from Norfolk, as set out on the previous pages here.

Just wait and get the birth cert - but I think we have found the right girl in Matilda Ulph (if she just gave her name to the registrar at the birth, he would be very used to Londoners dropping the "H" at the beginning of words and the name, Ulph is rare as it is - so Im 99.9% sure that he recorded Hulf for the name Ulph.
