Good evening all. My gx3 grandfather was born c 1839 in Germany, on all census records that I can find it is stated that he was a British Subject, what does this mean and how do I go about getting his birth certificate.

Thanks for taking the time to read this

Although he was born in Germany, his father was a British subject and so he passed on his citizenship rights to his child. Just like today. (Mothers could not pass on rights back then, of course.)

You really would have done better to put this question on one of the actual family history boards. There are people who know more about foreign birth registrations - me, I know zip. Why not delete this one (I won't mind ;) ) and start one on the Records Office board where you'll find the experts? Many of them never look at the chat boards.

There is a possibility that he may have been born on an army base thereby getting British status.

Have you tried Kew.?

I have seen on other queries re. other British Subjects born abroad is that one or both of their parents are British so their Birth should be recorded on British G.R.O. not sure because i am Irish. Some else may know an let you know.
Good Luck.

My Gt Grandfather was born in France British subject, I have never been able to find his birth certificate, he doesn't seem to have been registered at GRO. And I am sure his father must have died in France as well because there is no trace of him in England and his wife re-married as a widow.
