this is from the Glasgow Transport museum

"Both trams and buses were supplemented by a fleet of electric trolley buses – a cross between a tramcar and a motor bus - nicknamed ‘the ‘Silent Death’ because they were so quiet."

It says omnibus in the report but I wonder which one it could be?

Berona Report 25 Jul 2009 12:56

An Omnibus is a bus, isn't it?

madammorg Report 25 Jul 2009 12:11

my gt grandfather died 1926 after being knocked down by a bus in our town centre.
he was deaf and didnt hear the bus behind him although the driver sounded the horn.
the shopping centre is now paved over, but i cant help think about him when i walk passed marks and spencers where it happened.
his son (my grandfather) died of pneumonia a couple of months later.
1926 wasnt a good time for this part of the family.

cant help wondering if deafness could be hereditary as my gt gt grandfather was deaf, his son was, his son died at 23, was ok til then and the next generation (my father) was deaf - i am ok so far and so is my brother. they all seemed to have old age deafness perhaps it is just a coincedence.

I'm interested!!

My great-grandfather had a grisly death and I'm sure it would have been in the local paper. I know they do searches for about £25 to £30, I just haven't got round to asking them yet!

Yes, I think it's fascinating to discover accidents through research, but sad for the victims of course. One of my ancestors was killed by a "runaway dray horse" in 1913 (he was about 90 years old and liked to sit in his chair on the roadside!). Another GR member kindly sent me info from the inquest.

Also just discovered my G.Grandfather fractured his skull & died accidentally falling off a "fore and aft gangway" at the Royal Albert Dock, Woolwich. Death cert even says it took 20 mins (to die, presumably) - poor man, he was only 43.

Thanks to all concerned regarding this bit of research.
Its been quite fun, although not for Peter the victim.
If I get a full news report i shall let you know the outcome

Im supposed to be at home ill. I have been confined to my bedroom for the last 3 days with what was supposed to be Swine flu. Either the Tamiflu is very good or I didnt have it in the first place!

argghhh!

Just found a register of corrected entry on scotlands people for my guy, telling me the place & cause of death and I still cant read it all. The handwriting is dreadful.

All I can get is: Injuries sustained by being struck and ......................per verdict of jury.

I wish I could copy it to you so someone could decipher it!

Just putting it here in case anyone else wants the info, re Glasgow :))

Newspapers
The Glasgow Collection of Newspapers is available in the Glasgow Collection of the Mitchell Library. This contains a variety of newspapers published since 1715 until 1993 including

microfilm copies of the Evening Times from 1877,

Bulletin 1915 to 1960,

Evening Citizen 1877 to 1974,

Sunday Mail from 1919,

the Daily Record from 1895 and

the Glasgow Herald from 1790.
The Herald (as it is now known) is the only paper which is indexed and the quality of this is varied; from 1889 to 1905 an annual manuscript index is available (sometimes difficult to read); from 1906 to 1984 an annual index was published; from 1985 a good card index is available.
