I am shocked, my niece has just joined GR and she has paid £34.00 for 6 mths. I didnt think it was that much. I pay yearly and I think mine wasnt anymore than £15.00 last nov.

Is £34.00 normall now.

I have looked at my membership details, and it seems that I have been.... upgraded..... I did not ask for that.
I don't need it, I have GR, Ancestry, Scotlandspeople, and a couple of Irish sites.
Why would I need to upgrade?

I pay £10 a year for Standard. I think it's double that for new members. If they put the price up to £20 for me next year I don't think I'll renew. Then again, I might!

Deanna,

Whenever you renew your subscription you get a message that you have been "upgraded". It doesn't mean you have moved up a level.

Look on the top right of the screen to check you type of membership. If you have not subscribed to census etc records it should say 'Standard'

Joan,
I think I may mention that to her, I can't see any messages from her yet and that was her whole point of joining. She wanted to ask for help on the records board. I have tried but cant find the person she is looking for so suggested that she asked on there.

Just checked my details.

Apparently, I'm now an upgraded member. Did not ask for this.

Does this mean I have to pay more when my membership runs out at the end of August.

If so, how do I go about returning my account to the standard fee.

I too find that on the front page and ideed this one I am shown as being a standard meber..................... but on My Account page I am Upgraded. Think this might be when you are on continuous membership. I have been a member for nearly 5 years and pay £10 a year.

Linda :o)

Helen Report 4 Aug 2009 21:17

Thanks Linda,

I see I'm also a Standard Member on the front page.

Have also been paying £10 a year for a long time.

Assume I will still be paying £10 come the new year subscription - even tho' I seem to have been upgraded on my account.

All very confusing ....

I have just sent this to GR:

On my account page it shows that my account is an upgraded one. As I only wish to have standard membership can you please advise me why this has been changed without my authorisation.

I certainly do not wish to pay an increased membership fee when it is due for renewal in February 2010.

Thank you.

Sue,

Please keep us updated.

Would be interested to know what GR say about this.

What it means by upgraded is that you don't have the free membership ie the one where you can read message boards, build your tree but not make any contact with other members via pm or message boards.

Joy Report 4 Aug 2009 22:04

When I renewed I asked what upgraded meant, and was told that it was simply another expression for standard members at the time of having renewed.

Well that frankly is as clear as mud!!!

This website is really the pits when the webmasters start tinkering.

This was my reply:

Dear Sue
Thanks for your email,

I can confirm that we have to different types of upgrades.

Standard membership which you have and costs £9.95 for 6 months and gold membership which is £34.95 for 6 months.

I hope this helps.

Best regards,

I too am on continuous membership 'standard', but the 'upgraded' at the top of the page worries me a bit.

Hi Elsa,

Does that include the 1911 census as well? This is the likely census she may find info on.
