Does anyone get concerned about the amount of records that are now easily available? I know most of them have always been there but it's the ease of their availability that I have doubts about.

I haven't got a birth certificate am not in the phone book or on electoral rolls so it doesn't bother me personally so much but I know when I've been trying to find people all it requires is a bit of time on the net and a bit of spending cash and it's mostly *that* easy

The only thing I don't do is use my mother's maiden name in any security questions anywhere. I always pick something else.

But no, I don't worry too much about it. As you say, the info has always been available.

Mrs G, I have actually felt a bit guilty sometimes but then people could mostly find a lot of the same info about me if they wanted so I suppose it's even-ish:)

I've got so good at it that when I was telling No.2 about some search or other I'd done, he remarked as how with the blackmailing skills I so obviously have, it's hard to believe I'd ever be short of cash ... ;)

To answer the question: yes.

Here in Canada, BMDs are protected personal information for a long time after the event: in most provinces, 100 years for births, 75 years for marriages, that sort of thing. *No* public access, access only by the person in question and, if they are deceased, immediate family.

Voters' lists used to be posted on telephone poles for people to check. These days, disclosing personal information on the "list of electors" is a criminal offence.

Makes it hard to trace rellies -- but we like it this way!

No, it doesn't really bother me, life is too short to get paranoid. We just stay aware and alert, that is all you can do.

US is the worse as you can almost anything on anyone,even down to what credit they have.

Just curious...how does one manage to avoid being on an electoral Roll? I was under the impression that it was against the law not to give info. In fact, the two times we 'forgot' to fill in the card, we had a fellah knock on the door to take down our particulars with a ticking off.

I do understand that one can opt out from having ones information added to CD's and internet sites but not from the electoral Roll kept by the Councils surely.

I don't see why there be no sites like this or Ancestry. i haven't used either for looking for people under 100 years......not for myself anyways

The electoral roll
The Council is responsible for preparing the Register of Electors for West Lancashire.

The electoral register
The Electoral Registration Officer makes and keeps two versions of the electoral register - the full register and the edited register.

The full register
The full register lists everyone who is entitled to vote. You can check it by calling at the council offices or at some local libraries.

Only certain people and organisations can have copies of the full register, and they can only use it for specified purposes (like the prevention and detection of crime and checking your identity when you have applied for credit). The law says who can have a copy of the full register and what they can use it for. The full list of such persons and purposes is given in the Representation of the People (England and Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2002. It is a criminal offence for them to pass it on to anyone else or to use it for any other purpose.

The edited register
The edited register leaves out the names and addresses of people who have asked for their names to be excluded from that version of the register. The edited register can be bought by anyone who asks for a copy and they may
use it for any purpose.

Your privacy
If you want your name and address to be excluded from the edited register please put a X in the appropriate box on the registration form.

I still don't understand how some people manage not to be listed 'anywhere' though.

We met someone 25 years ago who was a non person. No NI number, bank account, permanent address, passport, driving license, tax records etc., I don't even know if he had NHS records that were current. I would hate to have to trace him in 50 years time...lol

Sorry Julie,,yes,,,,,,if there was restrictions on online indexes or in public place of BDM, or applying for certificates ,,then many wouldnt be so far on or be able to get as far back as they do,

so family tree connections would be able to be established for certain in some cases..

From a purely personal point of view, I have to admit to not being too bothered about it, although I realise that it would worry some folk.

Due to various factors, occupation, lifestyle, etc, our phone number and addresses and some family history have always been in the public domain, so I'm not really concerned if someone finds out officially when and where I was born or when I married or who my grandparents were. In fact, if someone could find a missing gt. grandfather's birth, I would be truly delighted!

From the safety aspect, we have had to take it as it comes and deal with it sensibly.


In a way, my life has been an open book with only a couple of personal sentences in it which I would prefer not to share!!


However, as I said before, I do understand other people's concerns.

To answer the original question - No, i'm not bothered by it.....

There's nothing out there about me that is secret - anything anyone can find out about me is already common knowledge to all my family, friends and aquaintences already anyway.......

The only thing I keep witheld is my phone number from the phone book etc, but that's to prevent nuisance calls (or not as the case may be lol)

And i daresay a lot of folk wouldn't necessarily know whats available out there anyway unless they induldged in a hobby like this :O)
