JaneyCanuck Report 8 Feb 2010 15:16

I understand a lot of people aren't bothered about it for themselves.

(I would be somewhat; I've been stalked on line by a very unpleasant nutbar with too much info about myself that I'd been foolish enough to disclose; fortunately, she'd been foolish enough to disclose even more, and although she didn't think anyone would connect it up, I and another of her victims did and persuaded her that pursuing her activities would be unwise in view of what we knew. And that is the one and only time I have used such information for personal purposes like that -- solely to protect myself and past and future victims of her menacing behaviour.)

But does no one have any concern about other people?

People who weren't married when their children were born or whose parents weren't married when they were born, who might not want the world at large knowing that. Or various other intimate family details.

People who have good reason for not wanting to be located by certain other people (say, a spouse afraid of a former spouse, or a parent afraid of custodial interference - kidnapping - by the other parent), whose whereabouts within the last few years can be found on previous electoral rolls. (And I do recall more than one "help" request on the boards here by a father wanting to locate a minor child to whom he obviously did not have access rights.)

I'm rather surprised that hardly anybody seems to give a thought to people in situations like those.

I'm not overly concerned about it. The important stuff like bank details, credit card numbers and so on is hidden as best as I can, and Inever throw bank statements in the bin, (my drawer is full of the wretched things lol), not even shredded.

I'm not in the phone book, and TPS registered, not that that stops foreign call-centres pestering us anyway, but it does reduce largely the amount of marketing calls we get.

Photos and personal details are largely kept off sites like facebook for the simple reason that others have had theirs used against them on silly vendettas on here, and to protect my grandchildren. Other than that, my details of who I am, where I am, where I was born etc, is not of any consequence, anyone can find that out and of that I have nothign to hide. I just don't give them out on here to be used in any way.

One of the boring aspects of my family tree is that I have not unearthed any skeletons there fore I don't think there is anything on record to hurt my family. I can see what you are saying though Janey and some people might have a potential problem. For myself, like TW I take all precautions I can re bank details etc I am sure that somewhere there is a loophole to be discovered by somebody but I will deal with that if it happens. I don't publish photos of my grandchildren on web sites etc and don't disclose any personal details about them on here. I am satisfied that I have done all I can so don't intend to worry overmuch about it. Life is too short.

Ann, I don't even put up birthday wishes for them on here. Firstly because it would be futile, my girls are not members and have no interest in the internet yet, let alone a genealogy site, and secondly becuase I dont' like naming them. Age, birthdate and name is all some people need to find them, so to me that puts them at risk.

AnninGlos Report 8 Feb 2010 16:18

No I only put my own and sometimes other half's birthday on here. I don't see the point in putting up birthdays of people who wont read them. I think there may have been a thread for eldest Grandson's 21st but I don't think I put it up myself and it didn't have his name on it.

In answer to Uggers question.
No I'm not bothered about my info on BMD etc. I'd doubt criminals who like to clone peoples IDs, would bother to search records & purchase certs etc. When its easier for them to raid peoples rubbish bins.

It doesnt bother me to a point, dont use my Mothers maiden name for security or anything like OH and I have a password the same one for everything. My records have been available for years, but due to who I work for some things have been removed as it has to be not by my choice.

TeresaW Report 8 Feb 2010 16:59

You have the same password for everything Hayley? That's a bit risky isn't it?

I have a set of six passwords, which include numbers, unrelated to anything personal, but which I use in turn for different things. (with a number in them they are just that little bit harder to work out) But my online banking has it's own password.

Uggers Report 8 Feb 2010 17:14

I'm not at all worried about criminals accessing my info, they're welcome to try and get anything out of my bank account:))) It's more being found by people you don't want to be found by that concerns me.

Susanwithnumbers, I'm on the electoral roll but not the public one like a lot of people aren't these days, should have said that sorry - but my oh isn't on any electoral roll at all - pretty straightforward cos I just don't put him on it lol

I think protecting our privacy in all parts of our life is a key issue, however, I am surprised that some people don't seem bothered about protecting it. In fact some seem keen to relinquish any rights to their privacy which I find very odd. (not saying that they are odd by the way ;) )

what is interesting is that we put out all this information, and don't seem to be too worried about people finding it or us, and we as family researchers depend on being able to find that information.

............ but if you try to find out if someone is working at a particular university or some businesses here in Canada, or get their telephone number, you will be told that "we cannot give out that information"!

That applies even if you know the person's name, and the department they work in ......... they will NOT give out the phone number. You might be told to leave a message, or you might be transferred to their voice mail, but you will not be given the phone number so that you can dial them direct.

Privacy rules and regulations!

I do not use OH's name, or any of my family's names on an open site such as GR or its parent site Friends Reunited. A few people know the names and we do use them in pms .................. I have been annoyed when a couple of people on FR used one or two of the names out on the open board.

It is amazing how unsafe GR and FR actually are ......................... I have found postings from both sites just by googling.

One of my FR postings from about 4 years ago turned up on a site called bidfrenzy (or something like that) .................... I have absolutely no idea why or who put it on there. I've never ever posted on that site, and couldn't access it to see it because I was not a member. All I could see on google was the start of the message, which was "Sylvia (maiden name) posted that ....", and that is all.
