Christine - old photos are good on display because it's amazing when visitors see a family resemblance that you may not have noticed.

Friends of my daughter's inherited an old house from a grandfather that needed to be pulled down. They took photos of the house before it was gone, then a photo of the first foundations of the new house and continued until the house was complete. They then had the photos specially framed to show everything from start to finish including a photo of the grandparents outside the old house and a photo of the young couple with their children outside the new house. It's beautifully done.
