.........................................................a slight shift in our relationships with our children. Our daughter told me last night that now OH has retired we should be relaxing more and not get too caught up in the volunteer work we do. Aren't we supposed to be protective of our children not the other way around:-)) |

Don't worry, Sue - I find I do it with my parents too, and they're 58 and 60. I keep suggesting that maybe they should get their hearing tested because Mum says Dad mumbles and Dad says Mum can't hear etc etc. |

That's around our ages too, Kate. I guess I can understand it. I can remember suggesting my father get a walking stick and the look he threw me:-)) I find it amusing most of the time but sometimes it can be a little annoying. |

Ooh Kate, speaking as the Mum with hearing aids since my late 50s. When you are having trouble hearing there is nothing worse than other people suggesting you get your hearing tested. You really really don't want to face up to the fact that you can't hear properly and may need aids because you have to also face up to the fact that you are getting old. (I am 69). Be gentle with your parents. |

Thinking, maybe your BiL has a phone that is not compatible with his aids. Before digital aids if you used an ordinary phone you would get painful feedback noise. |

Aged BIL chooses to have selective deafness, if he stays with us he keeps his hearing aid in his pocket despite me nagging like hell. |

My doc looked very embarrassed when she suggested that I buy a walking stick - but my daughter keeps ringing me asking "when are we going out to get this walking stick?". I keep putting it off, but at the same time, I won't go outside my home. Haven't checked my mailbox for a week because there is nothing to 'grab' if my knee should fail on me. The only way I check my mailbox now is when I drive my car out the drive and park in the gutter - close to the box - so I know I need the stick to give me the confidence I need, but it's hard to admit it. I'm not looking forward to the day when I give up driving! |

Berona, bite the bullet and get one. There are some very pretty coloured ones around in UK that I have seen people using, not sure if they bought them here or not though. Would a walking pole help your balance? Maybe you wouldn't feel so self conscious if you used one of those. |

Ann, the pretty walking sticks are available here in quite a few places, CANT remember where now! I have a friend who takes her hearing aid out to make a phone call, I turn the sound up on mine and use the system where anyone can hear it. When I find traffic noise too loud I turn my aids to loop, and that deadens it. |

My husband has hearing aids. He found it hard to adjust to them to start with as he could hear all noises magnified. He would complain that in the supermarket he could hear every trolley rattle and in restaurants he could hear other people's conversations which distracted him when we were talking. Luckily that seems to have settled. |
