lol I need some advice, ladies and gentlemen...imagine you (male) are, or your OH, is around 50 and looking to update their image..

what would you like to see them wearing?

add...without making them look too much like 'mutton dressed as lamb'!

Would you like some input on my ideas of male sartorial elegance...?

What size and shape is he?

Easier to say what we don't like men wearing: white socks (unless they're playing tennis), T-shirts that are a bit "snug", anything tucked in if they have a bit of a beer belly, anoraks.

a man who has to wear a suit and tie to work and would just buy a white shirt to go with...blue if he was feeling 'adventurous'...

Eldrick, while you're at it...what would you like to see a lady of around the same age wearing?...perhaps moving away from the twinset and pearls to something 'softer'....

Well, I like to see men wear natural fibres - none of these polo shirts made of synthetics 'cos in this weather they get all sweaty and hot looking.

Lots of good T shirts out there - and he's not too old to buy ones that are a bit "off the wall" ...

Does he look OK in jeans? Some men look dreadful in jeans but look good in chinos or (dare I say it) cords?

My recommendations are as follows then.

From the inside out - if you can still get them (try ebay) string foundation garments are comfortable and sensible, not to mention long lasting and in need of minimal care and ironing.

Socks should be of pure wool or cotton, depending on the time of year, with reinforced heels and thick soles for comfort. Outer apparel is a bit more difficult, but I would suggest a cotton checked shirt with large buttons to make life easier for arthritic fingers and cavalry twill or corduroy trousers, generously cut for comfort and smartness. A cardigan is good to top things off.

I find white trainers or plimsols are comfortable and sensible, but for dining out black ones are better and more acceptable.

For the casual look, I have a smock and straw hat.

Well, what I would like to see a woman wearing....? Do I really need to answer that.....?

Cotton casual trousers and a short sleeved shirt open at neck. casual shoes.

that's sort of the look Gill, i am just having difficulty with fitting it to the person in my mind lol.

Sounds just like me when I was his age!!! I wore business suits with plain shirts and tie and now I wear Sports Jacket, light coloured shirts which look smart with or without a tie and casual but plain shoes.

Don't try to change him into something he isn't because he will feel uncomfortable and resentful.

Give a range of suggestions but let him make the final choice.

Thanks Robert.....I am afraid the final say on what he wears is mine alone lol , 'he' being a character in a story :) but i am trying to make him feel 'comfortable' in his new clothes ;)

Chinos and polo shirt is good, smart but casual, and not too big a step from his conservative suit and white shirt. I would also get him into yachting shoes... or leather taupe casuals.

Is this for social, or for work as well?

I would go with chinos at work, too but maybe darker.... topped with a light coloured linen jacket for the summer, and a darker casual/smart jacket for the winter... look at Next and M & S online. He is likely not to be too adventurous just yet, so will make the first couple of purchases very tentatively.... by the end, he might be throwing in a couple of brighter items, lol

Cotton or cashmere sweaters to tone in.... loads of wonderful colours out there for men!
