Do other families have words they use which have perfect sense within the family, but would leave outsiders wondering?

I asked my daughter if she wanted me to wash her Smurf and she knew exactly what I meant.

.......a white turban style towel for wrapping around wet hair.

ha ha Gwyn I would have understood Smurf.

OH has a happy knack of understanding thingies and watchyamacallits, but yes we do have pet names for things that nobody else would understand (great for playing trivial pursuit at times).
we have names like Nick shirts,

'dooberries' ! when you can't get the name of something in your head...as in 'pass the dooberry' :))

and not a household item, but when my mum mentioned 'thingy- from you know what' it was a fun game guessing which tv actor it was ;p)...
oh and 'Remington Steele' was 'shorthand for 'Ryan O' Neal' lol

Years ago we had a shelf in the kitchen , Dad had put it up and one afternoon it fell down in spectacular fashion . Mum got a builder chap to put it back up and he said " there , you could stand a donkey on it now ! " it was forever after called " The Donkey shelf " .

That would go well with my Squirrel cupboard

When I ask my OH to pass the whatsit, he always gets it right! With sons toys, a roofie was a giraffe, and an efalump was an elephant.

Diane Report 18 Sep 2010 19:56

I used to get a funny look whenever i ask my children did they want ( worms' or snake's ) for tea = worm's were short spaghetti and snake's was long spaghetti.

When ever I talk about charlie, lily 1, lily 2 and the creep all my children know what I mean, but if they have some-one with them they have to explain and tell them that I have a name for a few of my plant's.

In our family 'doofers' refers to horse droppings - because they'll 'doofer' the garden!
Fump-fump - remote
Yakkies - chickens (my nephew's invention aged 2, for the chickens my sister kept - we have no idea why, but the name stuck!)
Eye bogies - sleepy dust
Eyes - glasses

Has anyone seen my windows? (Glasses)
where's the thing-ame-jig? (TV or Sky remote)
Anyone moved my Polyfilla? (Make-up)

maggiewinchester Report 18 Sep 2010 22:31

Helen - I love 'windows' for glasses.
If I had said, in my house that I was going to clean the windows the family would have got sooo excited - then to just clean my glasses LOL

...Mind you, why I was the only one to clean them beats me - I don't think I had the words 'Mother - window cleaner exraordinary' printed on my forehead!
