Reported today both by press and media that many thousands of tickets remain unsold for venues.

I think that a lot of Catholics (and others) feel that the RC church is out of touch with modern life, against women, against homosexuals, against birth control and, worst of all, appearing to be oblivious to the outrage over the appalling instances of child abuse. The Pope is the embodiment of all this and I'm sure a lot of otherwise 'staunch' catholics will stay away.

I know it has already been stated in another thread that the Pope's visit is costing the British taxpayer. BBC News tonight has mentioned a figure of twelve million pounds.

Our Unions have already been up in arms this week about cuts leading to job losses.

When will the people who "govern" our country get their priorities right? I realise that many of them are from wealthy backgrounds, but for people on fixed incomes (waving the flag for the pensioners yet again), who have brought up families, on one wage, and experienced some unemployment, life is getting harder and harder. We never had the chance to "save" huge amounts for our retirement. Our job was to look after the family, and get on with life, with perhaps an annual camping holiday to look forward to.

We have yet to face another winter, with sometimes the choice between being warm, or buying adequate groceries. The latter is an ever increasing bill, as will already have been pointed out on several threads. The fuel allowance goes nowhere near buying our winter fuel. We rely on buying logs in, salvaging as much fallen wood as we can, and using the oil central heating (no gas in our village), as little as possible.

And then the British taxpayer's money goes towards the Pope's visit! Not to mention hosting the Olympics in the next few years.

I would love to watch the Cabinet live for a year on our income, without any reserves to fall back on for renewal of appliances. They might have a different idea about the real cost of living for pensioners.

Maybe they were too greedy with the prices - people's priorities have changed, and of course the reasons already given will have influenced sales too.

The money they are making from the sales should go towards the policing and the cost of the visit should come from the huge amount of money the Catholic church is said to have stashed away somewhere!

Why should people who aren't Catholics have their taxes used to help his visit go well?


Angelsong, no politician would live on what the government deem sufficient for pensioners and others to live on.

The letters from DSS state: this is what the government say you need to live on' or words to that effect, they should amend that to 'what you need to try to exist on!'

My children were talking about this yesterday and saying that
There is so much "wrong" with this Pope how can the country worship him ........After discussions in school may say this popes early life is tanted with his "bad" behaviour

and like you all say Joe Public will foot the bill again!

See one of his entourage described landing at Heathrow as on par with landing in a third world country. He now apparently has cried off with a 'sickie'.

Someone tried to 'rectify' this faux pas by saying it was the number of 'non-white faces' the poor dear saw on landing at Heathrow!
Well, don't either of the fools know that, through evangelising and, to be frank, brutality, throughout history, the majority of Catholics aren't white!

The Pope is welcome Rits - he is a human being like us all.

BUT I am against funding for his trip coming out of the taxpayers pockets. especially when there is never enough funding for hospitals, police etc, what the money SHOULD be priority for.

I wonder, if any crimes are being done in that area today & over the next few days. How quick will police respond if they are so stretched as many of them are guarding the event ? :o((( .

£14.5ml spent on the popes visit.....The money should have been paid for by catholics.
So many people out of work and to spend that amount is disgusting.
Maybe it could have been spent on the 'abused'children.

There's nothing we can do other than vent our thoughts/view to the government, but then we don't get a choice anyway, and our thoughts/views basically will be ignored. :o((

I haven't seen any of the coverage but I'm glad if he is being booed. Nasty old man. The Catholic church gives its opinions on the way people live their lives - why shouldn't the public give their opinion on him?
