Julia Report 4 Oct 2010 13:40

Dizzi, I rather think this is one for the men folks who are into cars, which I am not. However, my absolute out of thin air guess is a Jowet Javelin for the car, only because I once knew someone that had one of these, in the 1960's, but it was old then.
Will have another look at the photo, but don't hold out much promise.

Dizzi, Its either a Dodge or Buick,American Car, and the numberplate seems to be from there as well.Definenetly not a Jowet Javelin or Jupiter.**M**

Julia Report 4 Oct 2010 15:03

Thanks Merlin, but I was only having a stab in the dark, as a non car driving person. I also thought Buick, or some other American make of car. But, keep going back and having a look at the picture. I think it is in England, because of the side of the street the car is parked on, but that does not make it a British car. How about all those Yankies that were stationed here after the war. Just a thought.

Yes its a Yank of some sort but the number plate looks iffy for a British one. Those Jowets used to go quite well for what they were, very advanced for their time, had one of each.**M**

Can somebody give me a clue for finding this picture?

If it's from this side of the ocean I should be able to tell. Being parked on the wrong side of the street isn't necessarily a barrier -- I live on a narrow one-way street, and the parking is on the "wrong" side. (Which means people constantly park on my side, because it feels like the "right" side, even if they're parked right under a "no parking" sign ...)

If you can tell which side of the car the steering wheel is on, that might be a better guide. ;)

In Genes photo section, just looked at it.

Ha, I'm useless. I'd say 1940s, by the clothing and hairstyles.

Not the US, though. US licence plates show the state and year, even back then.

Go to google images and ask for

old license plates 1940

(that's how they spell "licence") and you can see examples.

If you ask for

old licence plates 1940 Canada

you get Canadian versions (along with a little porn) -- also showing year and province.

So I'd have to say it's Brit.

Do, or did, Jersey in the Channel Islands have the J prefix to numbers?

Excellent theory.

I'd say 40s also, the lady on the right of photo reminiscent of Vera Lynn I thought, and I've photo's of my mum in a suit like that mid 1940s.

I'm no good on the car though, someone asks me about a car ...and I say 'red, blue' etc lol

Janey,

Many, many years ago, I did work in the motor trade, so have an eye for number plates, but have never come across one of these myself. Just a hunch, and then did a search and found some examples on wiki.

Elisabeth.

It is Jersey:

"Jersey registration plates consist of the letter 'J' followed by one to six digits."

Christina Report 4 Oct 2010 18:41

I was looking at the photo, & it looks to me that the J is not the first letter...I think there could possibly be another letter before it ???
looking at the windscreen wipers, they are laying the same way as on my car so I wonder if that means a right hand drive ( do the wipers lay to the other side on a left hand drive I wondered ??)
the back ground does look (to me) typically British of the 1940-50s ??
having said all that, I must confess I don`t know either !
good luck,
Tina x

JaneyCanuck Report 4 Oct 2010 19:35

The background too Christina -- walls around front yards (gardens) are uncommon in North America. Fences or nothing, usually.

The windshield wipers -- it depends on whether they are the kind that both go in the same direction, or the ones that meet in the middle! The one you can see is correct for the driver's side of a NA car either way, but would be correct for the passenger side of a UK car if they're the kind that meet in the middle. ;) (I think that's how most old cars were.)

Jersey certainly seems like the best thought.

What is that in the sky between the child and the lady on the right?
Is it a building?
I can't get a clear view.

There are GR members in Jersey. I hope they look in.
