Gwyn,

I have been trying to make it out, and think it might be an electricity pylon, or something. Not easy to make out.

All the time I have been on here you would think I would know this. How do I find GR photos?

right found it now. I don't think that is a single J I think there is another letter before it.
If it was a Jersey number and it is the forties it would be very surprising. Jersey was under occupation from 1940-45 and I am sure all cars were requisitioned by the German Army. Unless it was the very end of the forties, I think it took quite a while for them to recover.
It is a lovely photo and the lady on the right does bear a striking resemblance to Vera Lynne. Dizzie, I once found a photo and sent it to Practical Family History where it was identified by somebody, you could try that.

I agree with Ann in glos.

At first glance it does look like a Jersey registration but the number is too high, there would not have been that many cars here then.

We bought a new car about 15 years ago (we've had others since) and the reg was J70***. My current car, less than a year old, only has the reg 117***

erm just a thought, as it does look like an American car if not in America...would states have had their own letters for the reg number...thinking NJ... New Jersey?
