If so, what do you think of it? Worth buying?

Hello Ann, hope you are well. Obviously I have not got one, or I would not be asking the question. But:-
What is a Kindle.

A kindle is a device that allows you to read books by downloading the book from the internet onto the device - a bit like downloading music onto an ipod.

I was getting a kindle for xmas but am now getting a Sony e-reader as the Kindle is limited to Amazon only whereas the Sony allows you to purchase book downloads from a number of providers. Both allow you access to thousands of free classics.

My hubby is bringing my Sony one home tonight (now having it for my birthday instead) and I'm allowed to plug it in to check it works - I am soooo excited as I am a book fanatic.

Thank you Esta. Daughter has a Kindle, son has a different one, may be a Sony. The Kindle I found easy to read, some are not so easy. I think Amazon are increasing their selection all the time.

I love my Kindle, have had it nearly a month now, early Christmas present. Amazon have thousands of books to choose from including the classics, a lot of which are free. It is also easy to buy from other sites and just have the format changed. Believe me if I can do it anyone can!! Have 67 books on my Kindle so far, not having a Library near me it is wonderful to just click the download button and have the book on my Kindle in seconds ( I have wifi only). I just love it, best present ever.......

Thank you for that Fran, a good recommendation. I didn't realise that you could buy from other sites though so especially thank you for that.

Could any one say roughly how much the downloads cost? Currently I'm buying ordinary books from charity shops at about £1.50 each and need to weigh up the cost benefits.

Hi Fran,
Do you know if there is any way to “back up” books you have downloaded on to your Kindle?
I like the idea of one, but worry about how many books you would loose if the reader packed up working or was lost/stolen.

Regards,
Mayfield.

I have been told by my OH who has been researching it for me that Amazon keeps a 'library' for you with the books you have downloaded in it. I beleive this is in case you lose a book you can download it again, I assume for free.

I'm not sure I would like one as i like the feel of a book in my hands.(Just realised i didnt put my hearing aids back in after I washed my hair. Cant hear the keys go down!)

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 17 Nov 2010 19:50

I would really only like one for holidays Jean. We go away for a month and I can read a lot of books in that time so it would help to have some on an e book, would save weight. I couldn't give up proper books entirely, like you I like the feel of them.

I am learnung something new everyday .... today's new fact was about The Kindle.

However I have now got a question.

Does anyone know if their is a way to download books to sound (speech).

I have a friend who is totally blind, she would love to be able to have a large choice of books to listen to.

It is her birthday next week, I would love to be able to give her some good news.

AnninGlos Report 17 Nov 2010 20:43

I don't think it will affect book shops Jude. And if the government have their way with all the cuts there soon wont be any libraries to worry about.

Audible.com is owned by the Amazon.com company and is currently the world leader in audio books online.

You'll be pleased to know that they offer the largest and most diverse range of audio books.

Why not download the audiobook of your choice for free (which would include most titles on this webpage, too).

Talking Book Store Books is pleased to recommend Audible Audiobooks

I just entered "download talking books" into my search engine.
