Hi, just wondering, is it the case that some deaths were never recorded? I have been searching for a relative - Joseph Samuel Alden, b. Bristol 1849 - but cannot locate a death certificate ANYWHERE??

Perhaps he went overseas to live? I couldnt find the death of my gt gt grandfather then I eventually found he went to live in America.

Huia.

We determined he went to Australia in your other thread:

Look at any parish record burials, and you'll always find some 'unknown, found dead'. Sad, but true.

Huia: I have checked overseas but without any luck so far.
Rita, thanks for your input.
Detective - thanks for the tip.

Rose: My subsequent research has found that - despite his mother apparently writing in her will that he was "abroad" - he almost certainly did not come to Australia with his family (I have checked original passenger lists; nor did he die at sea as I may have thought, and there is no death record for him in Australia). I am sure that his wife must have come out to Australia a widow; hence my needing to find a death certificate...

Thanks again,

Scott.

freebmd has 597 deaths for "Unknown" in 1890 - most of them have no first names but one has "Bill the Painter".
