Jean

sorry ot hear about yoru back.

Hope it improves soon.

That same "less space" happened to us as well.

I think I've got rid of over 50% of my cooking things .................. had to decide whether I really needed more than 1 cookie sheet, more than 1 muffin pan, more than 1 this, that and the other.

We're delaying looking at mugs, cups and glasses ..... but a lot of those are going to have to go.

Well, the work is finished and we are now in the process of replacing everything in the kitchen, less cupboard space than before, so having to part with a lot of things that I didnt want to. Whole process made disastrous because I can ahrdly move for I have trapped a nerve in my back. cant get any relief from it. first time on boards for days, may be awhile before i am well enough to join in the chat.

Jean
I hope they can sort the floor for you without too much fuss.
I trust the carpet is not too damaged?....shouldn't have happened though.

I hate being without hot water, then have to remind myself how it was at my Gran's cottage.
They thought they'd really gone up in the world when they had a stand pipe fitted outside the front window and no longer had to walk to the village pump for water.... I don't remember those earlier days, but do remember the huge enamel bowl which was used for hand washing in the kitchen.

You'll soon be sorted and able to enjoy the improvements.

Well, we were allowed to use the shower this weekend, so we dont feel quite so dusty. On the down side, the water from the shower (its a wet room) has come out through the doorway and soaked the carpet outside. The floor hasnt been cambered properly. So it looks as though they may have to start that again!

Hi Jean
Hope its all sorted very soon, and i am sure it will be worth it in the end.
We had our kitchen and bathroom done a couple of years ago and one of the workmen for the bathroom went up in the loft and fell through the ceiling straight on to our bed bringing the lot down with him, what a mess it took longer to sort that out than the refit of the kitchen and bathroom:))

It sounds so simple, doesnt it, to have the kitchen done, but you dont realise how little you can do without a sink and running water. I know we managed when we were first married, but the equiment we bought was geared towards those problems. I dont now have a bungalow bath or a
copper boiler!!

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 4 Mar 2011 21:31

probably "watered" your garden!!!

we're lucky, we have 2 full bathrooms, each has a bath and shower combo

so we just did one, and then the other, when we re-did them about 4 years ago.

When we did the kitchen last year, we turned the "guest" bathroom in to the kitchen ....... washed up in there for about 5 weeks!

we decided to do the kitchen ourselves ....... so OH was "contractor" for the carpenter making new lower cabinets and doors for the upper ones, the plumber and electrician, we bought new flooring and had the company lay it.

We started around the beginning of October last year, and OH started painting the walls etc last week, after the last door for the upper cabinets was in place.

We did have a somewhat functioning kitchen all through ....... the stove and fridge were relatively new (within the last 2 years), so we decided to keep them. They stayed in the kitchen, so we could cook and there was always food in the fridge/freezer.

Hi Jean,

Sounds like you are fed up with the disruption - don't blame you but am sure it will be worth it when complete.

We also have only one toilet, when we got new flooring laid in the toilet a while ago, the toilet was out at the time - the tradesman wanted a loo - sorry I said, this is it. Don't know how he managed for the day as I went off to work.......

Jean (Monmouth) Report 4 Mar 2011 19:33

Well week one is over. Bathroom is done all barring that essential, the radiator! Not showering in a cold room at my age thank you! The toilet is finished except for a small radiator we have been promised to keep down the condensation. Kitchen has to have the non-slip floor laid and the decorating needs doing in al of them. Ceiling only in bathroom as that has been white tiled all round.
Have had a local man here to give me aprice for blinds for all three windows as they need new curtains anyway. Wont know myself when it is done, but I wish I could have gone away and left them to do it! No toilet on two days , had to ask neighbours on either side could we use their loo. Had a minute hand sink in the toilet and that was our only washing facility until today.

Ohhh....I really don't envy you. We had a new kitchen fitted 12 years ago and if it falls to pieces it is going to stay that way..........I couldn't go through it again!!

Everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. What should have taken one week ended up taking 5 weeks.

I hope everything goes smoothly for you .....it will be worth it in the end if you can get through it.
