ChrisofWessex Report 23 Jun 2011 13:10

Searching Fareham marriages came across Samways/Bastard/Kill and Hoar in the 19th century.

Stan seen it in baptism records as a description but never as a surname.

Never too old to learn!!!! The usual descriptions I came across in Records Office were baseborn or love child (the latter I thought had to be a very nice vicar).

Island

Island Report 23 Jun 2011 14:00

Hi Chris

I often get '300' names when I enter a common name. I *think* it's the maximum number (figure) that GR display - as a number, not how many names- when the number of names excedes 300. I hope that makes sense lol.
I've never seen a number over 300 but happy to stand corrected :-)

Hi Island

Out of curiousity I searched my maiden name again and beside - 300 names for............... is 'retrieve for more results' - which I did and kept pressing and came up with 1645!!!! My married name comes up with 4500!!!

I could be in for more searching on my trees.

Island

Island Report 23 Jun 2011 14:23

I hadn't noticed 'retrieve for more results before Chris. I just put my surname in.....4,500...I didn't know we were that common. Duplicates! I say Duplicates! :-D

Going back to 'Bastard', as a surname I believe the first 'a' is silent

I used to go to school with somebody with the surname Bastard. In the 40s we didn't think anything of it and yes, it was in Fareham.

And if I remember right the vicars name was Hoar.

AnninGlos Report 23 Jun 2011 21:15

Lol Island, he looked like a crow. I went to a C of E school and he used to take us for 'Scripture' (as it was then called), he'd be all in black and he had a long hooked nose.

AnninGlos Report 23 Jun 2011 22:03

Yes it wouldn't be nice now would it? But back in the 40s nobody thought anything of it. I would imagine nowadays the emphasis would be on the second syllable. I did used to know somebody called J...... Cock.
