a far right nationalist , this from the BBC

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14260195

"Edging into mainstream

......Following the attacks in Oslo and on Utoeya, it will be interesting to see whether many in the country develop a more sophisticated view of where the greatest threats are coming from, amid a growing realisation that extremism is deadly regardless of nationality, ethnicity or religion."

May I draw attention to the last line there, "extremism is deadly regardless of nationality, ethnicity or religion."

Next month a so-called 'nationalist' group known for previous marches are planning to 'visit' locally to me , an area many residents of which are Asian, at the same time the BNP are touring the country in a 'promotional van' their publications of their policies SOUND reasonable...jobs, education, environment, policing ...but read between the lines, see the 'calibre' of the comments and people on their site, that they target the youth with 'entertainment' which has at its heart hatred.

No doubt this will get pulled, or pulled apart... but think...the 'enemy' isn't always the one who 'looks different'.

He's the one ( whatever his race or religion ) who believes that other people are less worthy of respect or tolerance than his 'own folk'.

Apparently he had boasted about links with the group I mention above. They have not commented.

I saw him reported as being a *christian fundamentalist*...

whatever he is...he's an animal ! ...actually that's too nice a word for him and I'm not allowed to say what I think he is really x

Apparently, the longest jail sentence ever given in Norway is 21 years. They are a very lenient nation, and up to now have not had reason to be anything else.

I suspect that will change rapidly now. They cannot let this guy out, ever.

But you can bet your bottom dollar that no matter whose fault this carnage may be .................................. the more blinkered amongst us will maintain that it was not his.

In what way Robin? do you mean that he may be found to be not 'responsible' because of mental illness?

supercrutch

supercrutch Report 24 Jul 2011 10:08

He is completely 'sane' within the legal framework guidelines as far as I have read.

He 'in his mind' was completely rational regarding the murders (for that is what they are), the reason he stated he carried out these attacks was his hatred of multiculturalism. Somewhat simplified but you know what I mean. Therefore he attacked the Labour party at it's 'new shoots' level which would make the most impact.

Just so sad for the victims and their families and friends and a lifelong trauma for the survivors.

" Jens Stoltenberg, Norway's prime minister, has given a moving speech at an Oslo memoral service attended by King Harald IV.

"Amid the tragedy I am proud to live in a country that has managed to stand firm. I am impressed over how much dignity, care and strength we have. We are a small country, but we are a proud people. We are still shaken, but we will never give up our values. Our answer is more democracy and openness, never naivety," he said.

Cites a girl from the AUF camp (the youth Labour party): "If one man can show so much hatred, imagine how much love we can all show together. "

Rita, it has just been on tv about sentencing in Norway, the longest sentence is 21 years, they have only had one serial killer before, which I am thinking says something about the country.

If anyone feels they would like to send condolences, though it seems so little to be able to do, there are many messages here

Rita I think everyone's first instinct is that he should be shot...I know mine is! as is my first instinct for those like him, that the world would be a better place without them.

But .......I don't believe in making 'martyrs to a cause', which is how he could then be seen by those who share his opinions.

I don't believe in institutionalised murder, even if one knows it would be 'justice'. As i have said before I would like 'life' to mean life.... it goes against the grain to keep him alive, to see him freed at an age where he can still be a danger...but I believe that is the way it has to be in a civilised society, one that is better than one he would like to see.

TeresaW

TeresaW Report 24 Jul 2011 14:56

I for one am glad they took him alive. I'm sure in any other country he would have been shot on sight. At least this way they will get more information from him.
The fact also that there were unexploded bombs found on the island (clearly, IMO aimed for the prime minister's planned visit ), is a absolute forensic goldmine for the police.
He should at least stay alive to answer the many questions, and to answer to the nation.
I hope they can sort out a higher tarrif for imprisonment before he is sentenced, though hopefully, he will be individually sentenced for each person he killed.

Teresa, I have agreed with both your last posts. We have had New Zealand guests staying this weekend who wished he had been shot on arrest. We went to Oslo last year and a nicer, calmer city of people you couldn't wish to meet. It's kind of unreal that he picked on such a peaceable nation.

I haven't read all the papers yet so don't know how he was apprehended. Shocking story, those poor children.

Vera2010

Vera2010 Report 24 Jul 2011 20:33

I suppose it helps us to reason things if we assume someone must be insane but there are many people who at times of their life are not of sound mind but would never carry out such an atrocity Hatred is everywhere as are guns. Put the two together and you have such atrocities.

You could lock him away for ever and probably would not change him but as imprisonment is meant to be a form of rehabilitation, I suppose they have to try.

The discipline of the men who arrested him was immense. How they managed to take him alive with the carnage around them I do not know.

It Dosn't matter what his beliefs are ,,being mis understood or whatever else he [or she] believes in.
No real Muslim ,or Chistian believes in taking life this way,no matter what the reason
This man ,if you can call him that ,is clearly ,off his trolley.
It Is time the death sentence was brought back for this sort of crime.Fred :-(

Conan

Conan Report 28 Jul 2011 22:21

Does it not strike you as odd ....................... that a man who has such a hatred of Islam and who fears that all he cherishes is about to be overun by an alien invader should suddenly turn his vengeance upon his own society, his own race and his own government ?

Surely any right-minded "christian fundamentalist" would want to go out in a blaze of glory at some packed mosque on a Friday morning !

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 28 Jul 2011 22:29

Isn't he said to have done what he did to his government and their youth supporters because of their stance on multiculturism? A bizarre sort of punishment. If he truly is insane he will have seen that as justified.

Conan

Conan Report 28 Jul 2011 22:45

But Ann ............... some on here are saying that he is perfectly sane.

Muffyxx

Muffyxx Report 28 Jul 2011 22:54

No not really surprised he didn't target a mosque Robin...the way I read it was that he was angry at the government for allowing it all to happen more than he was consumed with hatred over religious matters.

Regardless. He's clearly an extremist which is always dangerous from whichever end of a spectrum you're at. ..and innocent kids suffered at his hands...for now I prefer to remember their lives cut short rather than tie myself up into knots about why this random lunatic felt compelled to do what he did.
Time enough for that when the facts are presented clinically in a court of law.
