JoanC Report 1 Feb 2014 17:24

I have had this four or five times over the last week and just had the java update. This is only happening on this site. I think its something to do with certain adverts.
Glad other people have had this I was beginning to think it was my computer.

I had that "unsafe" when on GR earlier this afternoon - I did a quick scan with Kaspersky and it was clear and Malwarebytes produced one which it then blocked. Moved off too quickly to notice the Java reference.

Computer guru warned me not to use Chrome, and be wary of java.

neither of them on this computer.

I had the exact same thing happen last night, exactly as Roy describes. It's very rare I go on the Military board but that's where I was when it happened (twice) - it happened when I was moving between threads.

Java is rarely required by most people and should be removed from any Windows system - this is official MS security policy. It is not installed as part of Windows OS.

Ads are a fairly common way of attempting to implant malware into a computer. Once the "fairly innocuous" malware is in it can open the door to something worse. In any case most of the delays and another annoyances when running Genes RU are down to the ad server over which GenesRU / BS have no control at all.

Best thing is just to say good bye to ads and install AdBlock.
Another handy gadget ( also free ) if you are running Firefox is "NoScripts" which gives the user complete control as to which sites can or can't run javascript and if so to what degree.

Taking the two above together they will deny script based attacks something which most AV programs are very poor at doing.

A few minutes ago, I also just had the java update request, first time for me, makes you wonder how seriously GR take security when these sort of things appear :-(

Elizabeth2469049 Report 2 Feb 2014 11:06

Just had it again - I have disabled Java , but would it be better to completely uninstall it? or is this notice nothing to do with them?

This is what Norton reports about the site:
http://safeweb.norton.com/report/show_mobile?name=14updatejava.com

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 2 Feb 2014 12:09

14updatejava.com is currently offline ( 403).
It is hosted in Orange County CA USA by Enom Inc.
"eNom is listed as the #1 registrar in terms of the number of spammer registered domains listed on URIBL"

1. If you do not have java installed it will not stop this script message appearing - it is kicked off by an advert or malware. Not having java installed prevents all kinds of mayhem getting started though.

2. ( especially for OFITG ) GenesRU & BS have no control whatsover over the adserver system ( which is run by a subs. of Orange ) including security. When GRU was owned by ITV it also had a major security breach caused by the ad server.

3. the best way of stopping this sort of problem ( and getting much better performance too ) is to run AdBlock ( free ) and NoScript (free).

It is also possible ( prob > 50% ) that the 14updatejava thing has been kicked off by a rogue toolbar or a program installed within a freeware package. When installing "freeware" be very careful to read the install options and deselect anything other than the product. It can be very difficult to fix things afterwards.

Do not run Lavasoft Adaware. This previously good product has been bought up by one of the largest mass mailing companies.

It is possible to disable the advertising system used by Bright Solid
. Unfortunately it is against T&C to say how to do this but if you know somebody with a knowledge of javascript they won't find it difficult.
