How many of you will appear on this Census ?

Unfortunately won't be around to see it but Grand and Great grand children will if interested.

I think most will appear on the 1961 and 1971, in 2061 & 2071 :-0

me - what was the date of the census in 1951? - my last year at boarding school, would it have been in the school holidays. and 1961 - I was in a London hostel during the week, going home at weekends. I don'tr remember it at all.

Strangely, I don't remember any of the UK Censuses :-0

!951 is understandable as I was only three. 1961 would also have been completed by my father, but in 1971 I was married and in my own house. We were still in the UK in 1981, but emigrated in 1982.

I can recall most of the Aussie ones as they are held every five years. The most recent being this year, when there was a major stuff-up by the Australian Bureau of Statistics which was encouraging people to complete it online.

There was a major cyber attack on the website and it was down for a few weeks. For some reason, even though I completed the previous one online, this time around I received a postal one :-S

I don't remember any either Allan until we got married. The first one would have been 1981.

Perhaps the Mrs filled it in for you . ;-)

My father was a registrar and was involved in 1951-1981.

What makes the 1981 stand out in my memory was the Census Collector. He insisted he stood there to make sure it was completed correctly, then had the cheek to make a comment on the list of academic qualifications.

I don't know if that was usual as I think subsequent census went into a sealed envelope. Even if it was, its easy enough to train yourself to 'block scan' to check that all sections have been completed. :-|

A relative was living in the US in 2010. Their 'census' was a knock on the door to be asked how many people lived there and if they were US citizens. :-S

I won't be on the 1951 Census. My parents and brothers will - they'd returned from Malta on the Empire Windrush in March 1951.
I'll be on the 1961 Census - we'd returned from Malta (again!) in March (again!) that year. (SS Devonshire this time, the Empire Windrush had sunk by then)

Edit: as we usually stayed with my gran in Hampshire when we came back, until dad had secured accommodation wherever he was based (mum refused to live in service accommodation), it will look like we'd never lived in Malta and 5, then 7 of us permanently lived in a 3 bedroomed prefab!!

Prime example of how misleading the censuses can be!!!

I was a Collector in the 2011 Aussie census. We delivered the forms by hand and also gave the census website address. At the time of delivery we made basic enquiries as to how many people were in the household

If the household elected to do it online we received a text message when it was completed, otherwise we had to return after the close of the census tp collect the paper copy.

We did a quick scan to check that all sections had been completed and the form had been signed and the completed forms were the delivered to our Supervisor.

I agree with Maggie that census don't always tell the full story.

I have been in England for every census since I was born, but have also lived quite a bit of my married life overseas, at 4 different addresses in 2 European countries.
Our son was born, while we lived there too.

Not me.
My parents married in 1949 and my older brother only will appear in 1951.

( i was the 4th child but, all 5 of us will be on the 1961 return)
