Very sorry state of affairs now.with all the knife crime. So many young.people losing their lives. What's the solution .there are not enough police on the streets .so easy to get knives is it parent responsibility or government getting more Police out & about & seen by residents what would you see as a solution Barbara

Not justifying knife crime at all, but "at least" it's slightly more targetted than guns where they just spray the whole area. Obviously not a good situation for the target in either case.
How much should the police have to mold children/young adults morals and behaviour and how much should be the family responsibility? I think families need to step up more than many do, but it just takes one bad apple in a group of friends to lead the others astray.

The trouble is these gangs where knives are prevalent are completely lawless and way past the time that parents can do anything. Even bringing them up correctly, once they get to teens they are often too scared to go against their peers. It would be interesting to know where they get their knives. My guess is on line and no proper check on who is buying them. Can't say they have to be over 18 or even 21 when a lot of knife crime is perpetuated by adults. drugs seem to be behind a lot of it and the police are doing a lot to try and stamp out these 'County lines'. I think stop and search is working in some areas as a lot of knives have been found. But then you read of somebody being stabbed with a kitchen knife. And, horrendously a butchers shop being targeted by youths who stole two butchers' knives. guns have to be held under lock and key in this country. Should knives be if they are being taken from the kitchen? Then how do you police that? :-(

Take kids to a morgue to see a PM or show them after event pictures then perhaps they may choose not to carry knives.

But perhaps like the the PC games they play, belive a stabbed victim gets up and walks away.

AnninGlos Report 2 Feb 2019 12:51

Kay, I really do think that the violent TV games have a lot to do with the violence, they are so conditioned by seeing it in front of them on a screen that it has ceased to horrify. Ye a morgue or talk to somebody who has survived maybe.

Caroline Report 2 Feb 2019 12:57

I think in many ways all of media is to blame in some ways. Yes "games" are very graphic for sure but even news reports/social media shows much more graphic content these days leading to desensitizing?

Sikhs can carry special knives (Kirpan) in the UK for religious reasons.

(BBC Radio 4). :-S

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 3 Feb 2019 10:16

Kirpans for symbolic, everyday, wear are small. The blade is usually something like 3” long.

If a man tried to use his religion as a reason for carrying a fixed blade, he’d be asked to show his other symbols of faith eg long hair, steel bangle & wooden comb. The 5th is cotton underwear.

Mind you, claiming it was a symbol of faith wouldn’t work if he was accused of threatening or harming someone with it!

My son, who was talking to a self defence trainer asked about the best defence if confronted by someone with a knife,

"learn how to run 100 yards in 10 seconds" was the reply...

In the case of a typical urban knife attack running away is not an option becasue the victim is unlikely to be aware of the imminent attack until it is far too late and in any case will not have an escape route available.

https://www.urbanfitandfearless.com/2016/09/self-defence-against-knife-attacks.html

In London at least the present knife crime does not very much affect most adults unless they are daft enough to intervene when they see an incident. Nearly all of the knife crime is mixed up with drug dealing and handy stolen urban transport such as mopeds, pizza bikes and pushbikes. The classic bad apples and other such attempts at explanation are totally wrong. Stop n search is counter productive.

Despite the propoganda that gets on the tv from time to time on ways and means to alleviate knife crime the sad truth is that it has become a fixed number in the urban territory. Those who can hide in gated streets, others develop survival strategies and the schools use the three wise monkeys option.

The police have chosen to put their resources into defeating what they call "county lines" and large scale cannabis farming. They are not winning.

As far as I know, the Skean Dhu can be carried if in traditional
dress here in Scotland, however if travelling by air it has to be
handed over to security where it is given to the Captain of plane
for safe keeping till person has arrived at destination.

There is no surer sign of the failure of a government than when some people are afraid to wander about fearing attack.

Confining themselves to the home is akin to prison.

Caroline

Caroline Report 12 Feb 2019 20:02

Is it a failure of Government or society as a whole Dermot? Let's be honest would any party have better control of it all right now??

Dermot

Dermot Report 13 Feb 2019 07:23

Caroline - in my district, prospective political candidates tend to promise everyone verbally that they will reserve you a place in Heaven just for your vote.

Still, I'm in no great hurry to see if they keep that unique unwritten agreement. :-D

Caroline

Once in a while.....enough monkeys and typewriters....they do actually achieve something...

'Three brutal murders reported by the Devon police yesterday' - in the otherwise lovely small city of Exeter. Two of the deceased were elderly identical twins.

Further gruesome details to follow today, I'm sure. :-0
