Been mulling over your ‘special ovens for potatoes’ comment, Sharron. In the end, I googled those four particular words and I believe you may be right - infra-red?

Andysmum - THANK YOU! It's all to do with Biga :-D
I'm so pleased it is actually called 'Black bread', and it wasn't a figment of my 3 year old imagination.

Liz, apparently, it's the Biga, which is a type of pre-fermentation used in Italian baking, and, it appears in black bread - which may explain why the bread made in Italy, by one of our group (a chef, as it happens), that was like Black bread, was perhaps made using an Italian recipe.

Channel 5 on Sunday have a programme on Britain’s favourite puddings. Good idea for a thread I thought and then realised I don’t have a particular favourite. But I do have hates : can’t even look at tapioca, won’t eat rice pudding after the way school lumped it, don’t like custard very much after school custard.

A few years ago We were invited to a birthday dinner at a good hotel. Couldn’t believe the pudding with was rice pudding ice cream.

Never seen that programme, Names, so I'll look out for it.

Milk puddings are fine with me. My favourite from those is semoline but I'll eat rice and frogspawn too. :-D

Can;t beat summer fruit pudding though. I may make myself one today as I have everything in - including thick clotted cream.

I so dislike syrup tart that I can barely bring myself to say it. Bannoffi pie is not far behind either, or sticky toffee pudding.

I haven’t had syrup tart for years and think that I’d now find it too sweet.

Was discussing this with OH who voted for crime brûlée until I pointed out if there were gluten free chocolate profiter rolls on the menu he’d jump at them.

He wondered, if it was his last meal, whether he’d go mad and eat all his old gluten filled food favourites, until I pointed out he’d have to be certain to die in the following 30 - 60 minutes, otherwise he would just feel like he was dying. :-D

I am not fond of pastry dishes - but if I were visiting someone's home and one was put in front of me, I'd eat it (or most of it, perhaps not the crusts) as I wouldn't want to seem ungrateful. I always feel I can get away with it by saying, 'I never eat crusts anywhere.'

I loved school dinners! :-D

JL
I think it is a one off programme, about 6.30 on Sunday.

I,m not too keen on semolina, but a massive spoonful of jam helps. As to summer pudding I’d just prefer a heap of strawberries with the clotted cream.

Added: you obviously didn’t go to school with me before 11. Rice pudding was delivered in a huge vat and it was a case of one lump or two.

Oooh - I loved the tapioca, semolina and rice pudding at school - I used to eat everyone elses!
Best rice pudding ever was in the Gurdwara (Sikh religious place)) at St Mary's in Southampton.

This was 1974, I think it was more likely a charcoal sort of contraption.

In the 70's at school, we had a desert known as Gyspy Tart served with 1/2 apple afterwards apparently to cleanse the teeth of the sugar!

I have searched high and low for a recipe and although i found one in a magazine, it never sets and therefore have never managed to replicate this delicious tart.
Up here they call it toffee tart buts its not the same.

The original i had was made with light brown sugar and evaporated milk which you whisked together until it thickens and is bubbly. But once poured into a pastry case, it sets on top but not in the middle no matter how long i whisk it for.
Does anyone else remember this desert from their schooldays?

Florence,
I don't remember it from school days in Hampshire, but it's widely on sale locally in some bakers and many supermarkets.
In the latter, they are usually individual filled pastry cases with a set mixture in them.
Sold as Kent Gypsy tarts.
