Am new to this, but hoping someone may be able to direct me

Briefly, my Mother is 87 now and is reflecting. Her Father was adopted and although I have his adoption papers, including his Mothers name, I am unable to trace her relatives. It was in 1901 and although a long time ago, it has always been a great sadness in Mums life and if we could trace someone in Florence's bloodline, my Mother would die with the puzzle complete. She gave him up for adoption ( a private one ) on Valentines Day I know she came from the Nottingham area and returned there after Grandad was adopted, so I have dates and I know who his biological Father was too. Florence was a servant in his house
So very long ago, quite a bit of info but so frustrating.......
Any suggestions would be welcome.....Long shot I know but for my Mum I have to try.....Thank you for reading.....

welcome to the board, you may be able to find Florence in the 1901 census and work from that, there are not too many of that name if she was born in Nottinghamshire,

For instance using freebmd.org.uk there is a marriage of a Florence Annie Wilson in Nottingham 1908 which could be a possible starting point? edit though there are others....

Thank you so much..........
Florence Annie Wilson ( Maiden name ) Is the Mother of Fred Wilson Elsom, Born 18th of May 1900, her address on his birth certificate is 21 Sleaford Road, Boston, Lincs Directly under the address is says U.D.( Any idea what this means? ) My Mother said that 2 midwives lived at this address, so I would assume that she stayed here to give birth?
Her name is listed on the birth Cert as Annie Florence Wilson, and she was a Mother's help (Domestic Service) but on the adoption papers it is Miss Florence Annie Wilson.
Mum knew she came from the Nottingham area and on the adoption papers, 14th feb 1901, it states she is a single woman, living in Newark in the County of Notts
again, thank you for offering........am so grateful

Jacqueline Report 28 Nov 2014 14:05

Where did you get the info that the un-named father was Mayor of Boston?

The inclusion of the name 'Elsom' would seem to be a more obvious clue to the father's identity

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 28 Nov 2014 14:22

There is no birth registration on freebmd for Florence Annie Wilson in Nottingham.

And using Nottinghamshire as a search tool produces only one.............in Doncaster district, in AMJ 1887

BonBon29 Report 28 Nov 2014 14:57

Elsom was the surname of adoptive parents.
It is a known fact within our family about his biological father and
he looked out for him during his life, our family
believe he knew he was his Father.
Thank you for the interest and information Jacqueline

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 28 Nov 2014 15:22

Elsom was the child's given second name when his birth was registered, as per the info posted on this thread.

Were his parents James Thurlby and Emma? If so, James married Emma Wilson in 1886. If this is them, likely to be related to Florence??

BonBon29 Report 28 Nov 2014 16:58

Yes Jan, that's right. They were his adoptive parents. I am aware she was a Wilson too but can find no evidence to link Florence and Emma.
When Emma was young her mother died and she was taken in by someone called Machin....i have also traced her as Emma Machin. She always told my Mother she was called Emma Machin, it was only on finding her marriage certificate that i became
aware she was born Platt Wilson.

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 28 Nov 2014 18:07

It's pretty confusing. Her mother Mahala is on 1851census as a Machin, unmarried, assuming I have the right Emma in 1881.
You will have to excuse me, but I am using my new tablet and have no idea how to copy &paste!!
There is a marriage for a Charles Machin to a Florence Wilson1906, but that is a stretch isn't it.
Have you considered getting the birth cert for Emma Platt Wilson?

ADDED back on the PC! I am guessing this is Emma, I get it now. There is no way of trying to prove/disprove a family link to Florence without a birth cert, and even then it would be tricky.

1871 England Census

Jan.....that is very interesting. Many thanks.....Possibility regarding Florence Wilson marrying Charles!! I will look into that one as i thought it unusual that the adoption papers only state James Thurlby as adopting him.......

You wrote:-

Elsom was the surname of adoptive parents.

Then you say they were called Thurlby

As already clearly shown, Elsom was his second forename
