Well done, Maddie! Curious thought that his name changed from Dominic to Thomas between 1921 and 1929. Also the fact that his birthplace changed to England.

very sorry for late reply, my father is ill and its been a bit hard for me.
mary dad was called patrtick Sweeney thank you I do have bits but not a lot.
I also had a picture of a grave stone with Thomas on.
the story goes that mary used to go visit the grave and next but one to it was the mrs crockers grave and her husband used to go visit there
this apparently is how they met.
I have never been convinced that dominic changed his name to Thomas
can any body tell me how do I go about finding the the grave or information on the late dominic martin please
may I thank you all for your lovely work

hi donna
haven't been able to find any death or burial for dominic, only those records posted above

I believe that Dominic and Thomas are one and the same. The address is the same on Thomas' death record as it is for Mary's remarriage where she gives her father's name as Patrick Sweeney.

For info, Charles Crocker's wife also died in 1934

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JKDK-MR4

Name Mary Ann Crocker
Event Type Death
Event Date 29 May 1934
Event Place Toronto, , Ontario
Gender F
Age 45
Birth Year (Estimated) 1889
Father's Name George Bristow
Mother's Name Annie Bristow
Spouse's Name Charles Crocker

marriage was 1910 in Uxbridge, in England

The death cert at that link shows her buried in Prospect Cemetery, so the story of how they met seems plausible.

(Findagrave does not show any of these names although Prospect Cemetery is supposedly over 90% photographed.)

I had left this tab open and just saw it again when my Firefox rebooted - just wanted to note, about Thomas/Dominic's name.

The Dominics I know are all called 'Dom'.

I imagine that became 'Tom', either because that is what people heard or because he decided life was easier to be a Tom than a Dom.

So then he became 'Thomas' ... by what's known as 'back formation' :-)

Dominic to Thomas seems odd ... but Dom to Tom is easy.

thanks just got back on this. one question if anybody could help.
above people have put that dominic was born in England but he states on his marriage certificate he was born in Italy and his father was called pasquale martin
do you think that he lied about this.
this man was destined for white lies to begin with I think he wanted to be someone who he wasn't or was always running away from things who knows

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 23 Feb 2018 04:02

I would think the lie was that he was born in England. He probably did not want to suffer the discrimination against Italians.

He was likely born Dominico/Domenico Martini.

familysearch shows three records for that name with father Pasquale: one birth record 1887 in Italy, one about that age (but with different mother) who died in Chicago, and one borh 1881 and living in New York. I suspect it was not an uncommon name in Italy.

It also occurred to me that with Mary's husband and Charles's wife dying in 1934, it's possible they too don't actually have headstones. It was the Depression, and people may not have been able to afford them. Have you considered just writing to the cemetery for info?

http://www.mountpleasantgroup.com/Locations/Cemeteries/Prospect.aspx

edit - Actually, the death records posted above for Lena and Tom show the grave number so it's unlikely there's anything else the cemetery could report, except whether there are grave markers.

Just for info ... looking at your old thread, I'm not sure whether you ever got the children of the Dominic + Catherine marriage completely sorted.

Allilio/Attilio, Maria, Corleana -- I don't really think there's any question about whether he was Italian. :-)

I also see, having had no recollection of the previous threads at all until I saw the link in this one and looked just now, that I referred to the likely Dom/Tom switch back in one of your other threads in 2015 ...

https://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/trying_to_find/martin/thread/1234730?page=3

and also that Lady Kira suggested that Peter (Peter Martin born in Italy) was an English alternative for Pasquale in the census where he shows as Dominic's father, and that is probable to a virtual certainty:

I wont start a new thread at all I am pretty useless at this sometimes thank you for all your help.
I am quite a novice to all of this and dominic martin as always got me.
I have never been able to find anything on his past but maybe if I looked at the fact that he could of been born in England may bring a brighter light
